Is Seafood Halal? Fish, Shellfish and the 4 Schools

Short answer Depends

It depends on the type of seafood and your school of thought. Fish is halal by broad agreement [1][2]. Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars allow almost all sea creatures, including shrimp, crab and lobster [4][6]. The Hanafi school allows only fish, and Hanafi scholars differ on shrimp [5]. Ja'fari rulings allow scaled fish and shrimp only [8].

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
Hanafi Only fish are halal from the sea. Shrimp is disputed, with many Hanafi scholars allowing it as a kind of fish. Crab, lobster, octopus, squid and mussels are not allowed. Fish that die on their own and float are excluded. [5][10][11]
Maliki Sea creatures are broadly halal; Malikis are even reported to allow land crabs. [4][6]
Shafi'i Sea animals are halal, including sea crabs and lobster, with the frog as a noted exception. Land crabs are not allowed. [6]
Hanbali All creatures that live in the sea are halal, whether fish or not. [4]
Ja'fari Only fish with scales and shrimp are halal. Lobster, crab, shellfish and scaleless fish are not. Fish must be caught alive or die in the net. [8][9]

What the Qur'an and hadith say

The Qur'an makes the game of the sea and its food lawful [1]. A well-known hadith, recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud and graded sahih, describes sea water as pure and what dies in it as lawful [2]. Another hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah names fish and locusts as two kinds of dead meat that are allowed [3].

This is why seafood needs no slaughter. The schools differ on one main question: does "game of the sea" mean every sea creature, or only fish?

How the four Sunni schools differ

Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars read these texts broadly. A Hanafi fatwa summary from Darul Ifta Birmingham reports that the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow all sea creatures, including oysters, shrimp, lobster and crab [4]. A Shafi'i answer by Shaykh Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti says sea crabs and lobster are halal in that school, while land crabs are not, and that Malikis allow even land crabs [6]. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta also rules that crab is permissible under the general rule for seafood [7].

The Hanafi school permits only fish from the sea [10]. Shrimp is the main debate inside the school. SeekersGuidance explains that the stronger Hanafi position allows shrimp because Arabs at the time counted it as fish, while some Hanafi scholars follow modern biology and avoid it [5]. Crab, octopus, squid and mussels are not allowed by Hanafi scholars [10][12].

The Ja'fari position

Rulings on the website of Ayatollah Sistani allow only fish that have scales, plus shrimp. Lobster, crayfish, crab, shellfish and scaleless fish are not allowed. Fish that die in the water are also not allowed, unless they died in the fishing net [8]. Al-Islam.org reports the same view on crab and lobster [9].

Quick guide by type of seafood

This summary follows the sources above. It is a guide, not a ruling.

  • Fish (salmon, tuna, cod, tilapia): halal in all four Sunni schools [1][4]. Ja'fari rulings require scales [8].
  • Shrimp and prawns: halal for Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars [4]; the stronger Hanafi view allows them [5]; allowed in Ja'fari rulings [8].
  • Crab: sea crab is halal for Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars [6][7]; not allowed by Hanafi or Ja'fari scholars [8][10].
  • Lobster and crawfish: allowed by the three schools [4][6]; excluded by the Hanafi rule that only fish are halal [10]; not allowed in Ja'fari rulings [8].
  • Octopus, squid, mussels, clams, oysters: allowed by the three schools [4]; not allowed by Hanafi scholars [12][13] or Ja'fari rulings [8].

Eating seafood out in the US

Even when the sea creature is halal for you, the dish might not be. Check for:

  • Alcohol. Beer batter, wine sauces and mirin show up often. See beer battered fish and mirin.
  • Pork. Clam chowder, gumbo and some shrimp dishes use bacon or sausage.
  • Shared fryers with pork items.

Chains matter too. See our Red Lobster page.

For single items, see fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, octopus and sushi.

Frequently asked questions

Is seafood halal in Islam?

Fish is halal by broad agreement [1][2]. Other seafood depends on your school. Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars allow most sea creatures [4][6]. The Hanafi school allows only fish [10], and Ja'fari rulings allow scaled fish and shrimp [8].

Is shellfish halal for Hanafis?

Hanafi scholars allow only fish from the sea, so crab, mussels, octopus and squid are not allowed [10][12]. Shrimp is debated; the stronger Hanafi view allows it because it was counted as fish by Arabs of the time [5].

Does seafood need to be slaughtered?

No. The hadith about the sea calls what dies in it lawful [2], and fish need no slaughter. Hanafi scholars do exclude fish that die on their own and float [11]. Ja'fari rulings require that fish be caught alive or die in the net [8].

Is calamari halal?

Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars generally allow squid as a sea creature [4]. Hanafi scholars do not, since squid is not a fish [13]. See our calamari page for details.
