Is Calamari Halal? Squid in the 4 Schools Explained

Short answer Depends

It depends on your school. Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars treat all sea creatures as halal, including squid [3]. The Hanafi school allows only fish from the sea, so it does not allow squid [4][5]. Ja'fari rulings allow only scaled fish and shrimp, so squid is excluded [6]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
Hanafi Not allowed. Only fish are lawful from the sea, and squid is not a fish. A SeekersGuidance answer describes eating it as disliked and sinful in the school. [4][5][7]
Maliki Allowed. The school treats sea creatures as lawful; one summary notes the eel as its exception. [3]
Shafi'i Allowed. All creatures that live in the sea are lawful, whether or not they are fish. [3]
Hanbali Allowed. Like the Shafi'i school, it treats all sea creatures as lawful. [3]
Ja'fari Not allowed. From the sea, only fish with scales and shrimp are halal. [6]

What calamari is, and where the ruling starts

Calamari is the menu name for squid, usually sliced into rings, battered and fried. Squid is a soft-bodied sea animal with tentacles. It is related to the octopus, not to fish.

The ruling starts with the Qur'an, which makes the game of the sea and its food lawful [1]. A well-known hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud describes sea water as pure and what dies in it as lawful [2]. Because of these texts, seafood that scholars accept needs no slaughter.

The disagreement is about scope. Does "game of the sea" cover every sea creature, or only fish? Squid sits right on that line, so the answer changes with the school you follow.

Why most schools allow squid

A summary from Darul Ifta Birmingham reports that the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools treat every sea creature as lawful, whether it is a fish or not [3]. The Maliki school takes a similar broad view, with the eel noted as an exception in that summary [3].

Under this reading, squid is simply another animal of the sea. It falls under the general permission in the Qur'an and the hadith [1][2]. Scholars in these schools apply the same reasoning to octopus, oysters and other non-fish sea life.

Why Hanafi scholars do not allow squid

The Hanafi school reads the texts more narrowly. Only fish are lawful from the sea [5]. Every other sea animal is excluded, even though it lives in water.

A SeekersGuidance answer by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan, approved by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, applies this directly. It says squid is not a fish, so it is not permissible in the Hanafi school, and it describes eating it as disliked and sinful [4]. The answer also notes that other schools hold all sea creatures to be lawful [4].

Mufti Online, a Hanafi fatwa service in South Africa, gives the same rule that only fish are permitted from the sea [7].

Shrimp is the one sea animal that Hanafis debate, because Arabs once counted it as fish. Squid has no such history, so it is not part of that debate. See our shrimp page for that discussion.

The Ja'fari position

Rulings published by the office of Ayatollah Sistani allow fish with scales and shrimp. Other sea animals, and fish without scales, are not allowed [6]. Squid has no scales and is not a fish, so it falls outside what these rulings permit. Followers of other Shia scholars should check their own marja's rulings.

Ordering calamari: what else to check

Even if squid is halal for you, the dish might not be. Ask about:

  • Batter. Some restaurants use beer batter. See beer battered fish.
  • Fryers. Calamari is often fried in the same oil as other appetizers, which can include pork items.
  • Sauces. Some recipes use white wine or cooking wine. Asian squid dishes may use mirin or rice wine.
  • Squid ink pasta and sushi. Squid ink comes from the squid itself, and squid appears in sushi as well.
  • Dried squid snacks. Read the label for flavorings and wine.

Frequently asked questions

Is calamari halal for Hanafis?

No. The Hanafi school allows only fish from the sea, and squid is not a fish. SeekersGuidance describes eating squid as disliked and sinful in the school [4]. Other schools allow it [3].

Is squid halal for Shia Muslims?

Not under the rulings of Ayatollah Sistani, which allow only scaled fish and shrimp from the sea [6]. Shia Muslims who follow another marja should check that scholar's published rulings.

Does squid need to be slaughtered?

No. For scholars who allow squid, it falls under the rule that sea food is lawful without slaughter [1][2]. What you still need to check is the cooking, such as beer batter, wine sauces and shared fryers.

Is fried calamari at restaurants halal?

Only if squid is halal in your school and the dish has no haram ingredients. Ask whether the batter contains beer and whether the fryer is shared with pork items. Squid itself is allowed by Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars [3].
