Is Beer Battered Fish Halal? Does the Alcohol Cook Off?
Generally, no. The fish is halal, but beer is an intoxicating drink added on purpose, and many scholars say food made with it stays forbidden even if the alcohol cooks off [3]. USDA data also shows cooking often leaves much of the alcohol behind [5]. Choose fish fried in plain or soda-water batter instead.

What the schools of thought say
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Islamweb (cooking with intoxicants) | Using an intoxicating drink in cooking is forbidden, and the food stays impure even if the intoxicating quality leaves during cooking. | [3] |
| Islamweb (food made with wine) | A dish with wine mixed in is generally forbidden unless the cooking leaves no trace or effect of the wine at all. | [4] |
| Ibn Uthaymin (via IslamQA) | A small amount of alcohol mixed into food that leaves no intoxicating effect does not make the food haram; drinking alcohol on its own is still forbidden. | [6] |
The fish is halal, the beer is the issue
Fish is halal in all four Sunni schools. The Qur'an permits the game of the sea and its food [1]. Cod, haddock, pollock and other white fish used for fish and chips are all scaled fish, so they are halal for Ja'fari followers too. See our fish page.
The question is the batter. Beer batter uses beer in place of water. The bubbles make the coating light and crisp, and the beer adds color and flavor [7][8]. A simple version uses roughly two parts flour to three parts beer [8]. That is a lot of beer, not a trace.
Doesn't the alcohol cook off?
Not fully. The USDA's table of nutrient retention factors measures how much alcohol remains after cooking [5]:
- Alcohol stirred into hot liquid and taken off the heat: 85% remains.
- Flamed: 75% remains.
- Baked 25 minutes without stirring: 45% remains.
- Baked or simmered 1 hour: 25% remains.
- Simmered 2.5 hours: 5% remains.
Deep-frying fish takes only a few minutes, and the batter seals quickly. So the idea that all the alcohol burns away does not hold up.
Many scholars also say this misses the point. Beer is an intoxicant, and the Qur'an calls intoxicants an evil of Satan's work [2]. An Islamweb fatwa on cooking with wine says the food is impure even if the intoxicating quality leaves during cooking [3].
How scholars view it
Scholars agree that drinking beer is forbidden. They differ a little on food where alcohol was an ingredient:
- The stricter view treats any food made with an intoxicating drink as forbidden, because the drink was impure when added [3].
- A middle view forbids such food unless cooking leaves no trace or effect of the drink at all [4]. Islamweb applied this to beef jerky made with wine and said it was forbidden to sell [4].
- A more lenient view, from Ibn Uthaymin, allows tiny amounts of alcohol blended into food when no intoxicating effect remains [6]. Even he distinguished this from consuming alcohol directly [6].
Beer batter uses beer as a main liquid, which is why most answers treat beer battered fish as not halal. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.
Ordering fish and chips
- Ask what's in the batter. Many British-style shops use flour, water, baking soda and a little vinegar instead of beer [8]. Menus in the US often say "beer battered" outright.
- Ask about the fryer. Even with plain batter, fish may share oil with beer-battered items or bacon-wrapped foods.
- Check frozen fish. Some frozen beer-battered fillets list beer or ale in the ingredients. Plain breaded fillets usually don't.
- Make it at home. Use chilled sparkling water in place of beer. It gives the same light, bubbly coating.
Also watch for malt vinegar on the side. It is made from malted barley, and our vinegar page explains why most scholars accept it.
Frequently asked questions
Is beer batter halal if the alcohol evaporates?
Is fish and chips halal?
Is non-alcoholic beer batter halal?
Batter made with non-alcoholic beer is a separate question, since some such beers still contain small amounts of alcohol. See our non-alcoholic beer page and check the label for the alcohol percentage.
What can I use instead of beer in batter?
Chilled sparkling water works well. Batter only needs a carbonated liquid for lightness, and beer is one of several options cooks use [7].
