Is Lobster Halal? Hanafi, Shafi'i and Other Views

Short answer Depends

It depends on your school. Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars allow lobster as a sea creature [3][4]. The Hanafi school does not, because it allows only fish from the sea, and lobster was not counted as fish [5]. Rulings from Ayatollah Sistani's office also say lobster is not permissible [6]. Check cooking methods too.

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
Hanafi Not allowed. Only sea produce that the Arabs counted as fish is permitted, and lobster was not. Shaykh Faraz Rabbani adds that people who follow other schools should not be criticized for eating it. [5]
Maliki Allowed; the school allows sea creatures broadly, even land crabs. [4]
Shafi'i Allowed. Sea crabs and lobsters are halal; the only debate is whether they are disliked. [4]
Hanbali Allowed; all creatures that live in the sea are halal, including lobster. [3]
Ja'fari Not allowed. Only scaled fish and shrimp are halal from the sea. [6][7]

Where the difference comes from

The Qur'an makes the game of the sea and its food lawful [1]. A sahih hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud says what dies in the sea is lawful [2]. Every school accepts these texts. The disagreement is about scope: do they cover every sea creature, or only fish?

Lobster is a clear test case. It lives in the sea, but it is not a fish.

Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali: lobster is allowed

A Darul Ifta Birmingham summary reports that the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow all sea creatures, including lobsters [3]. In a SeekersGuidance answer, Shaykh Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti says sea crabs and lobsters are halal in the Shafi'i school. The only internal debate is whether they are merely disliked (makruh). He also notes that Malikis are even more lenient and allow land crabs [4].

So for most followers of these three schools, lobster is halal, with no slaughter required. The way the lobster is killed, whether boiled or split, does not change its status in these schools, since sea creatures need no slaughter [2].

Hanafi: lobster is not allowed

Shaykh Faraz Rabbani of SeekersGuidance explains the Hanafi reasoning. Hanafi scholars, citing classical works like Bada'i al-Sana'i and Fath al-Qadir, read the Qur'an's permission as covering the sea produce Arabs considered wholesome, which was fish. Lobster and crab were not counted as fish, so they are not allowed. Shrimp is different, because Arabs treated it as a kind of fish [5].

He also notes that the schools differ here. People who eat lobster following another school should not be criticized, and there is room to follow a sound opinion from another school [5]. If you are a Hanafi thinking about that, ask a scholar you trust.

Ja'fari: lobster is not allowed

The office of Ayatollah Sistani states that only fish with scales may be eaten from the sea, with shrimp as an exception. Lobster, crayfish and scaleless fish are not allowed [6]. Al-Islam.org reports that there are some differences among Shia scholars on lobster, but the general view is that it should not be eaten [7].

What to check at a lobster restaurant

If lobster is halal for you, the next step is the dish:

  • Butter and sauces. Plain drawn butter is fine. Some sauces, like lobster thermidor or bisque, use wine, sherry or brandy.
  • Lobster rolls are usually lobster, mayonnaise and a bun, but check for bacon add-ons.
  • Seafood boils may include sausage or beer.

Lobster mac and cheese raises a second question about the cheese, since some cheeses use animal rennet. See mac and cheese.

Langostino is often sold as "langostino lobster." It is a small crustacean, closer to a squat lobster than a true lobster, but the school differences above apply the same way, since it is not a fish.
