Is Crab Halal? What Each School of Thought Says

Short answer Depends

It depends on your school of thought. Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali scholars allow sea crab, and Egypt's Dar al-Ifta rules crab permissible [4][5][6]. The Hanafi school allows only fish from the sea, so crab is not allowed [7]. Ja'fari rulings also do not allow crab [8]. Land crabs are treated more strictly.

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
Hanafi Not allowed. Only fish are halal from the sea, and crab is not a fish. [7][9]
Maliki Allowed. Malikis are reported to allow even land crabs. [5]
Shafi'i Sea crab is halal; land and beach crabs are not. Some in the school call sea crab disliked (makruh), but not forbidden. [5]
Hanbali Allowed; all creatures that live in the sea are halal. [4]
Ja'fari Not allowed. Only scaled fish and shrimp are halal from the sea. [8][10]

The evidence both sides use

The Qur'an makes the game of the sea and its food lawful [1]. A sahih hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud says the sea's water is pure and what dies in it is lawful [2]. Another hadith names fish and locusts as dead meat that is allowed [3].

Scholars agree on these texts. They differ on their scope. Does "game of the sea" mean every animal that lives in the sea, or only fish? That question decides the ruling on crab.

Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali: sea crab is allowed

A Darul Ifta Birmingham summary reports that the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow all sea creatures, fish or not, including crab [4].

In a SeekersGuidance answer, Shaykh Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti explains the Shafi'i view in more detail. Sea crabs and lobsters are halal, and the only debate in the school is whether sea crab is merely disliked. The classical prohibitions in Shafi'i books refer to crabs that live on land or the beach. He also notes that Malikis allow even land crabs [5].

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta takes the same broad approach. It rules crab permissible under the general rule that seafood is allowed unless a text forbids it or it causes harm [6].

What counts as a sea crab? The crabs sold in US stores and restaurants, such as blue crab, Dungeness, snow crab and king crab, are caught at sea or in coastal waters. The land crabs that the Shafi'i texts exclude live mostly on land or beaches [5]. If you follow the Shafi'i school and are unsure about an unusual species, ask a scholar you trust.

Hanafi: crab is not allowed

The Hanafi school allows only fish from the sea, and lists crab among animals that are not halal [7]. Hanafi fatwa bodies such as Mufti Online in South Africa apply this to crab, octopus and other non-fish [9]. Unlike shrimp, there is no strong Hanafi debate about whether crab counts as a fish.

Ja'fari: crab is not allowed

Rulings from the office of Ayatollah Sistani allow only scaled fish and shrimp from the sea, and say shellfish is not halal [8]. Al-Islam.org notes that crab is not classed as fish in Ja'fari law and so may not be eaten [10].

Crab dishes and imitation crab

If crab is halal for you, check how it is cooked:

  • Crab boils often include sausage, and some use beer in the broth.
  • Crab cakes may be bound with mayonnaise and seasonings that are fine, but some recipes add bacon.
  • Sushi rolls with crab may use mirin in the rice. See our sushi page.

Imitation crab (surimi) is usually made from white fish, such as pollock, with starch and flavorings. Fish is halal by broad agreement [1][2], so many Hanafis who avoid real crab eat it. Some brands add real crab extract, wine or mirin, so read the label.
