Why Wendy's is not halal certified in the US, Canada or the UK

Wendy's is one of the largest burger chains in the US. It also operates in Canada, the UK and many other countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Indonesia [4].

The official Wendy's websites for the US, Canada and the UK do not mention halal [1][2][3]. The UK FAQ covers many common questions, but halal is not one of them [3]. We found no halal certificate or certifier listing for any of these three countries. With no official statement, the honest answer is "not certified."

Bacon is a regular part of the menu. The Canadian site promotes a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger and applewood smoked bacon at breakfast [2]. Wendy's has also sold limited-time pork items in the US, such as a pulled pork sandwich in 2014 [4].

Is Wendy's chicken or beef halal?

  2. Ask what it covers. Is it the beef only, the chicken only, or the whole menu?
  3. Ask about bacon. If the branch serves pork bacon, ask whether it shares a grill with the burgers.
  4. Ask about the fryer. Ask whether fries are cooked in the same oil as chicken or fish.
