Is Chicken Halal? Zabiha, Machine Slaughter & Labels
Chicken is a halal animal, and scholars agree it may be eaten [6]. But the meat is only halal when the bird is slaughtered the Islamic way, with God's name said over it [2][3]. Most US supermarket chicken is not certified halal, so look for a trusted certifier and ask whether it was hand-slaughtered.

What the schools of thought say
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Chicken is listed as halal. Meat from Jews and Christians can be valid only if God's name is invoked and the throat is cut properly; one Hanafi answer says ordinary Christian-slaughtered meat today does not meet this, and advises avoiding meat whose slaughter can't be verified. | [6][7] |
| Permissive view on supermarket meat | Chicken is halal. The Qur'an permits the food of the People of the Book, and one widely read answer holds such meat permissible when properly slaughtered, with unknown cases treated as permissible by default. | [4][8] |
| Machine slaughter (all schools) | Disputed. Some certifiers and scholars reject mechanical blade slaughter because the blessing is not said over each bird; others accept it under conditions. | [9][10] |
Why chicken itself is halal
The Qur'an forbids a short list of meats: carrion, blood, pork and animals dedicated to other than God [1][2]. Chicken is not on that list. Hadith forbid birds that hunt with talons [5], and chicken is not a bird of prey. Hanafi lists of permitted animals name chicken and rooster as halal [6].
So the question is not the bird. It's how the bird was killed. The Qur'an tells believers not to eat meat over which God's name was not said [3]. A chicken that died from a blow, strangling or a fall is also forbidden [1].
Zabiha, hand slaughter and machine slaughter
Zabiha means slaughter by cutting the throat with a sharp blade, while saying God's name. Many Muslims in the US look for "hand-slaughtered" chicken because most large poultry plants use automated blades.
Scholars disagree about machine slaughter. The UK's Halal Monitoring Committee rejects it, saying a Muslim must slaughter each bird and say the blessing over each one [9]. A SeekersGuidance answer (Hanafi) advises avoiding machine-slaughtered chicken for the same reason, and notes that larger animals like cattle are rarely machine-slaughtered [10]. Some certifiers follow a view that allows machine slaughter with conditions [10].
Stunning is a related debate. Some scholars worry that stunning kills the bird before the cut, which would make it carrion [9].
Supermarket chicken and the People of the Book
The Qur'an allows the food of Jews and Christians [4]. Scholars apply this to meat in different ways. One common view holds such meat permissible when it is properly slaughtered, and treats meat as permissible by default when the method is unknown [8]. A Hanafi answer from SeekersGuidance requires that God's name be consciously said and three of the four throat vessels be cut. It advises caution when that can't be confirmed [7].
In practice, regular US supermarket chicken carries no halal claim. Your choice depends on which view you follow. See our kosher vs halal guide for how kosher poultry compares.
What to check in US stores
- No federal halal standard. USDA does not define what halal means. It only requires labels to be truthful [11]. A 2025 petition asked FSIS to define "zabiha halal" as hand-slaughtered without stunning [11].
- New York rules. Under New York's Halal Foods Protection Act, sellers must register and name their certifier [12].
- Find the certifier name. A "halal" sticker with no certifier is hard to verify. Halal Monitoring Services (HMS) certifies only hand-slaughtered meat and checks the chain from slaughterhouse to store [13].
- Ask the butcher. Ask whether the chicken was hand- or machine-slaughtered, and whether the bird was stunned.
For specific brands, see Costco chicken, Perdue and Tyson.
Processed chicken and restaurants
Nuggets, deli slices and broths can contain other animal ingredients, such as gelatin, or be cooked with pork products. Read the label and check our chicken broth page. At restaurants, halal status depends on the meat supplier. Ask to see a current certificate with the certifier's name.

What does zabiha chicken mean?
Zabiha means the bird was slaughtered by cutting the throat with a sharp blade while God's name was said. Many US Muslims use it to mean hand-slaughtered. HMS, for example, certifies only hand-slaughtered meat [13].
