Is Whataburger Halal?
Whataburger is not halal certified. The chain says its burgers use 100% pure beef [1], but it makes no halal claim and names no halal certifier. Its menu also includes bacon and pork sausage, served at breakfast and on some burgers [2]. Whataburger operates only in the United States [2]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Does "100% pure beef" mean halal?
No. Whataburger says it uses 100% pure American beef on its burgers [1]. That phrase is about what goes into the patty: beef and nothing else. It says nothing about how the cattle were slaughtered.
For beef to be halal, the animal must be slaughtered according to Islamic rules. A halal certifier checks this at the slaughterhouse. Whataburger does not say its beef is halal and does not name a certifier. So the beef is not confirmed halal, even though it is not pork.
This is a common point of confusion. "Pure beef," "all-natural" and "no fillers" are quality claims. Only a halal certificate, or a clear halal statement from the company, tells you about slaughter. Our page on whether beef is halal explains the rules in plain terms.
Pork on the Whataburger menu
Whataburger is mainly a burger chain, but pork is part of the menu [2]:
- Bacon appears on burgers such as the Bacon & Cheese Whataburger.
- Breakfast includes biscuits with pork sausage or bacon, and items such as breakfast taquitos [2].
Because pork is handled in the same kitchen, some Muslims also worry about shared grills, spatulas and fryers. Whataburger does not publish a policy on keeping pork separate. If this matters to you, ask the staff how they cook beef, chicken and pork.
You can always ask to leave bacon off an order. That removes the pork from your sandwich, but it does not make the beef or chicken halal.
A quick way to order with fewer concerns is to choose items with no meat at all, such as fries or a shake. Even then, ask about shared fryers if strict separation matters to you, since the company does not publish a cooking-oil policy.
Where Whataburger operates
Whataburger was founded in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950 and is still based in San Antonio [2]. It has more than 1,000 locations, mostly in Texas and other Southern and Southwestern states, such as Arizona, Oklahoma, Florida and Georgia [2]. Its own store pages say it serves burgers, chicken, salads and breakfast at locations across the country [1].
Whataburger does not operate outside the United States, so there is no country where it is halal certified. Every location follows the same national menu, with no halal program at any branch that we could find.
Halal burger alternatives
If you want a burger that is confirmed halal, look for a restaurant with a current halal certificate. Before you go, compare other chains:
In Texas cities such as Houston and Dallas, many independent halal burger shops display a certificate. Check the certifier's name and the expiry date before you order. For background on another common breakfast swap, see our page on turkey bacon.
Frequently asked questions
Is Whataburger beef halal?
No, it is not confirmed halal. Whataburger says it uses 100% pure beef [1], but that refers to the patty having no fillers. It does not say the cattle were slaughtered by halal rules, and it names no halal certifier.
Is Whataburger chicken halal?
Whataburger makes no halal claim for its chicken, including the Whatachick'n sandwich and chicken strips [2]. Without a certificate or official statement, the chicken is not confirmed halal.
Does Whataburger have pork?
Yes. Whataburger serves bacon on some burgers, and its breakfast menu includes pork sausage and bacon [2]. Pork items are cooked in the same restaurants as the beef and chicken.
Is there a halal Whataburger anywhere?
We found no halal-certified Whataburger. The chain operates only in the US and does not run a halal program [2]. If a branch claims to be halal, ask to see a current certificate.
