Is Burger King Halal?

Short answer Varies by country

Burger King is not halal certified in the United States. The certifier HMS says it has not inspected or certified Burger King and cannot confirm the meat is zabiha [1]. Burger King runs more than 18,700 restaurants in over 100 countries, and its Middle East menus use halal products [2]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Why Burger King is not halal in the US

Burger King is one of the largest burger chains in the world, with more than 18,700 locations [2]. In the US, it does not hold a chain-wide halal certificate, and it does not publish a halal statement.

The US certifier HMS (Halal Monitoring Services) says it has not inspected or certified Burger King, so the chain's halal status is unverified [1]. HMS has not checked the slaughterhouses, processors or distributors that supply the beef and chicken [1]. For that reason, it cannot confirm the meat is zabiha.

That is not proof that every item is haram. It means no one has checked the supply chain for you. For the US, the honest answer is "not certified."

Burger King in other countries

Burger King changes its menu from country to country. It notes halal or kosher products in the Middle East and Israel as examples of these local menus [2]. In Muslim-majority markets, the local operator sources its own meat, so the halal answer there is different from the US.

In the UK and Canada, we could not find an official chain-wide halal statement. Some branches in areas with large Muslim communities may make their own claims. Treat these as branch-specific and ask to see the certificate.

When you travel, look for the certificate at the counter. It should name the certifier, the restaurant and an expiry date.

Whoppers, fries and cross-contact

Even if you skip the beef, a few other things matter at an uncertified Burger King:

  • Shared grills and fryers. Patties and other items are cooked on shared equipment. HMS warns that certification may cover only certain products, not the whole kitchen [1].
  • Pork items. Check the menu for bacon and other pork toppings, and ask for them to be left off.
  • Cheese and sauces. Cheese may be made with animal rennet. See our page on American cheese for the main views.
  • Plant-based burgers. A meat-free patty can still be cooked on the same broiler as beef. Ask how it is prepared.

If cross-contact matters to you, a fully certified halal burger place is the safer choice.

How to check a Burger King near you

  1. Ask for the certificate. A real halal certificate names the certifier, the address and an expiry date.
  2. Check the certifier's directory. HMS says any Burger King it certifies would appear in its directory, along with what the certificate covers [1].
  3. Ask what the certificate covers. Is it the chicken only, the beef, or the whole menu?
  4. Don't rely on a sign or staff alone. A sign in the window does not show how the meat was slaughtered.
