Is Dave's Hot Chicken Halal?
It depends on the country. Dave's Hot Chicken in the UK and Ireland says all its chicken comes from halal-certified suppliers [1][2]. In the US, we found no published halal certificate or official chain statement, so the honest status is not certified [4]. Ask your branch for its supplier certificate. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Halal status by country
| Country | Status | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Not certified | Dave's US website and corporate About page do not mention halal, and no US certificate is published. Wikipedia says all locations serve halal chicken, citing one 2021 local news report, but Dave's has not stated this. Check each branch. | [5][6][4] |
| United Kingdom | Halal | Official FAQ says all chicken is halal from certified suppliers, pre-stunned and hand-slaughtered. Other ingredients are not halal certified, and the kitchen does not run under halal procedures. | [1] |
| Ireland | Halal | Official FAQ gives the same answer as the UK: halal chicken from certified suppliers, pre-stunned; other ingredients not certified. | [2] |
| Canada | Not certified | The Canadian website does not mention halal. Ask the Toronto-area branch for its supplier certificate. | [3] |
Why Dave's Hot Chicken is halal in some countries and not others
Dave's Hot Chicken started in Los Angeles and now has restaurants in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and several Gulf countries [4]. Outside the US, each market is run by a franchise partner. In the UK and Ireland, the partner is Azzurri Group [4], and its websites answer the halal question directly.
The UK and Ireland FAQs say every piece of chicken served comes from suppliers certified as halal [1][2]. They also say the birds are stunned before being slaughtered by hand, and that supplier certificates can be seen on request at any restaurant [1][2].
The US is different. Dave's US website and its corporate About page say nothing about halal [5][6], and we found no US halal certificate or chain-wide halal policy. Wikipedia states that all locations serve halal chicken, but its only support is a 2021 local news story about a Houston opening [4]. That is not the same as a certificate. Until Dave's publishes an official US statement, the honest answer for the US is "not certified".
What "halal chicken" means at Dave's UK and Ireland
The UK FAQ is careful about what it promises. The chicken is halal, but the company says "our supply chain and kitchen do not operate under Halal procedures" [1]. It also says it does not hold halal certification for its other ingredients, such as sauces, seasonings and sides [1][2].
This matters for two groups of people:
- People who only eat zabiha (hand-slaughtered, unstunned) meat. Dave's UK and Ireland chicken is pre-stunned [1][2]. Scholars differ on stunning. Many accept it when the bird is still alive at the moment of slaughter, while others do not accept stunned meat at all.
- People who avoid shared kitchens. Since the kitchen is not run under halal procedures [1], items are prepared alongside ingredients that are not certified.
If either point matters to you, ask the branch to show you the supplier certificate and name the certifier.
How to check a Dave's Hot Chicken near you
Because the US and Canada have no published halal policy [3][5][6], each branch is the place to confirm. Use these steps:
- Ask for the certificate. Ask to see the halal certificate for the chicken supplier. A staff member saying "yes, it's halal" is not proof.
- Check the details. The certificate should name the certifier, the supplier and a date that is still valid.
- Ask about stunning and slaughter. If you only eat hand-slaughtered, unstunned chicken, ask how the supplier slaughters the birds.
- Ask about the fryers and sauces. Even halal chicken can share fryers and seasonings with other items.

Dave's Hot Chicken in Canada and the Gulf
Dave's first international restaurant opened in Toronto in 2021 under a Canadian franchise partner [4]. The Canadian website covers the menu, locations and contact details, but it does not say anything about halal [3]. If you live in Canada, contact the branch or use the contact page to ask about the chicken supplier.
Dave's also has restaurants in Dubai, Riyadh and Doha [4]. We did not find an official Dave's halal statement for these markets during our research, so check the local branch's certificate in the same way.
Other hot chicken and fried chicken options
If you can't confirm halal status at your local Dave's, compare it with other chains. See our pages on Popeyes, KFC, Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane's. Status at many of these chains also changes by country, so always check the page for where you live.
