Is KFC Halal?

Short answer Varies by country

KFC is not halal certified in the United States, and the US certifier HMS lists it as not verified [8]. Only a few franchise owners have sourced halal chicken [1][9]. In the UK, selected KFC restaurants are approved by the Halal Food Authority [2]. KFC Canada began switching to halal chicken in 2024 [3], and KFC Malaysia is JAKIM certified [5]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Halal status by country

CountryStatusDetailsSource
United States Not certified No chain-wide halal program, and HMS has not inspected or certified KFC. A 2009 KFC policy bars franchisees from making religious dietary claims; a federal judge upheld it against a Chicago-area franchisee who sold halal chicken. KFC said in 2009 that only a handful of US locations offered halal items. [8][9][1]
United Kingdom Some items halal About 200 of KFC's roughly 1,000 UK and Ireland restaurants serve halal food. They are accredited and audited by the Halal Food Authority, handle no pork, and serve only HFA-approved food and drink. KFC UK says its halal chicken is stunned before slaughter. Other UK branches are not halal. [2]
Canada Some items halal KFC Canada moved Ontario restaurants (except Thunder Bay and Ottawa) to halal-certified chicken from May 15, 2024, and said all menu chicken would meet halal guidelines by the end of 2024, with Maple Lodge Farms as supplier. Pork was dropped except at Taco Bell co-branded stores. A 2024 CBC investigation found staff often overstated whole-restaurant certification. [3][7][4]
Malaysia Halal KFC Malaysia's operator, QSR Brands, says JAKIM and state Islamic religious councils inspect its premises before granting halal certification, and imported ingredients must carry JAKIM-recognized certificates. [5]
Australia Some items halal KFC told reporters in 2015 that only three Australian stores were halal certified, with no plans to add more. Check the current status locally. [6]

Why KFC is halal in some countries but not in the US

KFC is a global brand, but each country runs its own supply chain. The chicken a KFC buys depends on local suppliers, local demand and local rules. That is why the answer changes when you cross a border.

In the United States, KFC has never rolled out halal chicken as a chain. When KFC tested halal restaurants in London in 2009, its US spokesman said there were no plans to test a halal menu in America [1]. The same report said only a handful of US franchise locations served halal items, and that franchisees who want to do this must request it and work directly with a halal-certified supplier [1]. That report is old, but later events point the same way. KFC adopted a 2009 policy that bars franchisees from making religious dietary claims about their food. A federal judge later ruled that KFC could stop a Muslim franchisee with eight Illinois stores from advertising his chicken as halal, even though his bone-in chicken came from certified processors [9]. In 2026, the US certifier HMS still lists KFC as not verified, saying it has never inspected the chain's chicken sourcing [8]. So the honest US status today is: not certified as a chain.

In Muslim-majority markets the picture flips. KFC Malaysia says its premises are inspected by JAKIM, the national halal authority, and state Islamic councils before it can use the halal logo [5].

KFC in the UK and Canada

UK. KFC UK works with the Halal Food Authority (HFA), which accredits and regularly audits its halal restaurants [2]. These branches do not handle pork, and KFC says their food and drink is HFA-approved [2]. Only a minority of UK restaurants are in the program, so most KFCs in the UK are not halal [2]. KFC UK also states that its halal chicken is stunned before slaughter [2]. Some Muslims and some certifiers accept stunned halal chicken, while others only accept unstunned (often called "zabiha" or hand-slaughtered) meat. Which one you follow is a personal and scholarly choice.

Canada. In 2024, KFC Canada told community leaders that its Ontario restaurants would serve halal-certified chicken from May 15, 2024, except in Thunder Bay and Ottawa [3]. The notice said halal chicken would reach the rest of Canada by year-end, and that pork products were dropped except at locations shared with Taco Bell [3]. KFC Canada later said all chicken on its menu would meet halal guidelines by the end of 2024, and named Maple Lodge Farms as the supplier [7]. Later in 2024, CBC Marketplace looked at halal claims at fast-food chains, including KFC. It found that staff sometimes told customers a whole restaurant was certified when it was not [4]. Halal chicken and a fully certified restaurant are not the same thing.

How to check a KFC near you

Because status depends on the branch, check before you order:

  • Look for the certificate. A certified branch should display a current certificate from a named certifier, such as the HFA in the UK [2] or JAKIM in Malaysia [5]. Check the date.
  • Ask what is certified. Is it only the chicken, or the whole restaurant? In Canada, CBC found these were often mixed up [4].
  • Ask about pork. A halal branch in the UK does not handle pork [2]. In Canada, locations co-branded with Taco Bell kept pork products [3].
  • In the US, ask directly. A franchise owner may source halal chicken on their own [1], but there is no chain-wide list. Ask for the supplier and the certificate.

If staff can't show a certificate, treat the branch as not certified.

Stunning, zabiha and fried chicken

Two questions come up a lot with KFC. The first is stunning. KFC UK says its halal chicken is stunned before slaughter [2]. Some halal certifiers accept stunning as long as the bird is alive at the time of slaughter. Others reject it. If you only eat unstunned meat, a UK KFC will not meet that standard.

The second is shared equipment. A fully certified restaurant controls this, because the certifier checks every ingredient and the kitchen. A branch that only buys halal chicken may still fry other products in the same oil. Ask the staff how they cook halal and non-halal items.

Halal fried chicken alternatives

If there is no certified KFC near you, compare other chicken chains before you go. Each page explains the status by country:

Local halal fried chicken shops are also common in US cities with large Muslim communities. The same rule applies there: ask to see a current certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Is KFC halal in the USA?

No. KFC is not halal certified as a chain in the US, and HMS lists it as not verified [8]. A few franchisees have sourced halal chicken [1], but KFC policy bars them from advertising it as halal [9]. Ask any branch that claims to be halal for its certificate.

Is KFC halal in the UK?

Some UK branches are. KFC UK says selected restaurants are accredited and audited by the Halal Food Authority and do not handle pork [2]. Most UK branches are not halal, so check the branch details before ordering.

Is KFC chicken zabiha?

Not in the UK. KFC UK says its halal chicken is stunned before slaughter [2]. Some halal certifiers and scholars accept stunned poultry, while others require unstunned, hand-slaughtered meat. Choose based on the standard you follow.

Is KFC halal in Canada?

KFC Canada began serving halal-certified chicken in Ontario in May 2024 [3] and said all menu chicken would meet halal guidelines by the end of 2024 [7]. A halal chicken supply does not always mean the whole restaurant is certified [4], so ask at your branch.

Is KFC halal in Malaysia?

Yes. KFC Malaysia says JAKIM and state Islamic religious councils inspect its premises before it receives halal certification and can use the halal logo. It also requires imported ingredients to carry certificates from bodies JAKIM recognizes [5].
