Is Panera Halal?
No. Panera Bread is not halal certified in the United States or Canada. The certifier HMS says Panera is not certified or monitored by HMS and that it cannot confirm the meat is zabiha [1]. Panera runs more than 2,000 bakery-cafes in the US and Canada [2]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Not certified | No halal certification and no official halal statement. HMS lists Panera Bread as not verified. | [1] |

Why Panera is not halal certified
Panera Bread is a bakery-cafe chain with more than 2,000 locations, including about 100 that trade as St. Louis Bread Co. [2]. It is owned by JAB Holding Company [2]. The chain does not publish a halal statement, and no halal certifier lists it.
The US certifier HMS (Halal Monitoring Services) says Panera is not currently certified or monitored by HMS [1]. HMS has not looked at where Panera's meat comes from or how the animals were slaughtered, so it cannot confirm the meat is zabiha [1].
That does not mean every item on the menu is haram. It means no one has verified the meat for you. For the US and Canada, the honest answer is "not certified."
Soups, salads, bread and mac and cheese
Panera is known for bread, soups and salads, so many Muslims ask about meat-free items. Here is what to think about, since Panera does not certify any of them:
- Chicken and turkey. Panera's chicken and turkey are not halal certified [1]. A salad or sandwich with chicken carries the same issue.
- Pork. Panera reports on its pork supply [2], and the menu includes pork items. Ask for bacon and ham to be left off, and check the ingredient list.
- Soups. A meat-free soup can still use a meat-based stock. Read the ingredients before you order.
- Cheese. Cheese may be made with animal rennet. Our pages on cheese and mac and cheese explain the views.
- Bread and pastries. Some baked goods may contain ingredients like gelatin or mono- and diglycerides. See our page on mono and diglycerides.
Panera posts nutrition and ingredient info for its menu. Use it, and ask staff about shared prep surfaces.
How to check a Panera near you
- Ask for a certificate. If a branch claims halal, it should show a certificate with the certifier's name, address and expiry date.
- Check the certifier's directory. HMS says certification is granted per location and recorded in its directory [1].
- Read the ingredients. For meat-free items, look for stock, gelatin, rennet and alcohol-based flavorings.
- Ask about shared surfaces. Sandwiches are built on the same counters, and soups may share ladles.
Panera does not list any certified branches, and we found none.
Alternatives for a quick lunch
If you want a fast-casual meal with clearer halal options, compare our pages on CAVA, Chipotle and Naf Naf Grill. Some of these chains use halal meat for certain items, and their pages explain which ones and where.
For sandwiches, see Subway, which has halal-certified stores in some countries. Local cafes with a visible halal certificate are often the simplest choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Panera chicken halal?
No. Panera's chicken is not halal certified. HMS says it has not examined Panera's meat supply or slaughter method, so it cannot confirm the chicken is zabiha [1].
Is Panera halal in Canada?
Panera has cafes in the Greater Toronto Area [2], but we found no official halal statement for them. Treat them as not certified unless a branch shows you a valid certificate.
Is Panera mac and cheese halal?
Panera does not certify its mac and cheese as halal. It has no meat, but the cheese may use animal rennet, and scholars differ on that. Check the ingredient list, and if you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.
Does Panera serve pork?
Yes. Panera buys pork for its menu [2]. Ask for pork items like bacon to be left off, check the ingredient list, and ask about shared prep surfaces.
