Is Cava Halal?

Short answer Not certified

No, Cava restaurants are not halal certified, and the US certifier HMS lists Cava as not verified [4]. Cava operates only in the United States [2]. In 2021 its official account said the braised lamb was certified halal [3], but Cava has published no current halal details for any dish [1]. Ask your branch. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Halal status by country

CountryStatusDetailsSource
United States Not certified No restaurant halal certificate or halal policy published, and HMS has not inspected or certified Cava. In 2021 Cava said its braised lamb was certified halal; there is no current statement, and nothing for chicken or steak. All 439 restaurants (end of 2025) are in the US. [4][1][2][3]

Why Cava is listed as not certified

Cava is a Mediterranean fast-casual chain based in Washington, D.C. At the end of 2025 it owned and operated 439 restaurants in 28 states and Washington, D.C., all in the United States [2]. Some of them are former Zoës Kitchen locations that Cava converted [2].

The menu leans on foods many Muslim diners like: grilled chicken, braised lamb, falafel, hummus and pita. That makes it easy to assume the meat is halal. But Cava's corporate and investor materials do not mention halal certification [1]. Its annual report says it serves antibiotic-free beef and chicken, with no word on halal [2]. HMS, a US halal certifier, says Cava is not on its certified list and that it has never inspected the sourcing behind Cava's meat [4].

Apart from one 2021 reply about lamb (below), there is no certificate or official statement, so HalalLookup lists Cava as not certified. That does not prove any item is haram. It means the halal status can't be confirmed.

What about the braised lamb?

You may see claims online that Cava's lamb is the one halal item on the menu. This one has an official source. In January 2021, Cava's own X account replied to a customer that its braised lamb is certified halal [3].

That reply did not name the supplier or the certifier, and it is several years old. We found no newer statement from Cava, and HMS's 2026 guide does not treat any Cava item as verified [4]. Cava's current menu lists spicy lamb dishes, and Cava has not said on its website or in its investor materials whether today's lamb carries the same certification [1]. Supplier choices can change.

If the lamb is the reason you want to eat at Cava, ask the restaurant team, or Cava's guest support, to confirm in writing which supplier is used now and who certifies it. The 2021 reply covered the lamb only, not the chicken or steak.

Menu items to think about

Since Cava has not published halal details for its menu [1], here are the questions many diners ask about this kind of restaurant. They are general points, not confirmed facts about Cava's recipes.

  • Chicken, lamb and steak. These are the main concern. Cava has said only that its braised lamb was certified halal, back in 2021 [3]. For chicken and steak, the slaughter method is unknown. Read more on our is chicken halal and is beef halal pages.
  • Rice and grain bases. At many restaurants, rice is cooked in broth. Ask whether the rice and grains are made with water or with chicken stock.
  • Shared grills. Falafel and vegetables may be cooked on the same equipment as meat.
  • Cheese and yogurt sauces. Feta and other cheeses can be made with animal rennet. See our is feta cheese halal page for the different views.

A fully plant-based bowl with greens, hummus, falafel, vegetables and a dressing avoids the meat question. Some people are still careful about shared grills and utensils.

How to ask at a Cava restaurant

Cava's staff work from the company's menu and supplier choices, so a crew member may not know where the lamb or chicken comes from. To get a clear answer:

  1. Ask whether the restaurant has a halal certificate for any protein. If it does, look for the certifier's name and an expiry date.
  2. Ask how the rice and grains are cooked.
  3. If there's no certificate, contact Cava's guest support and ask for a written answer.

A verbal "yes" at the counter is not the same as a certificate.

If you want a similar bowl with a published halal claim, look at chains that answer the question on their own sites. Compare our pages on Mezeh, Naf Naf Grill and Chipotle, and our guide to Mediterranean food. Local, independently certified Mediterranean restaurants are another good option.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cava chicken halal?

Cava has not published a halal certificate or official statement for its chicken [1], and HMS lists the chain as not verified [4], so it can't be confirmed as halal. Ask your branch whether it holds any halal certificate before ordering a chicken bowl.

Is Cava lamb halal?

In January 2021, Cava's official X account said its braised lamb is certified halal [3]. It did not name the certifier, and Cava has not published a current statement for its lamb dishes [1]. Ask Cava guest support to confirm the supplier and certifier in writing.

Is Cava halal in the UK or Canada?

Cava has no restaurants in the UK or Canada. At the end of 2025 it operated 439 restaurants, all in the United States [2], so any halal answer applies to US restaurants only.

Does Cava serve pork?

Cava's menu is built around chicken, lamb, steak, falafel and vegetables. Even so, having no pork on the menu does not make the meat halal, because the slaughter method is not published [1].
