Is Subway Halal?
Subway is not halal certified in the United States or Canada, and we found no official halal statement for either. In the UK and Ireland, some Subway stores serve only halal meats, using halal chicken, turkey ham, turkey rashers and beef pepperoni [1]. Not every UK store takes part [3], so check the branch first.

Halal status by country
| Country | Status | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Not certified | No chain-wide halal certification or statement found. A small number of franchisees have run halal stores in the past. | [4] |
| United Kingdom | Some items halal | Participating halal stores list halal chicken, turkey ham and rashers, and beef pepperoni and salami. Many UK stores are not halal. | [1][2][3] |
Why Subway is halal in some UK stores but not in the US
Subway is a franchise system. Individual owners run the stores, but the brand sets the menu and approved suppliers in each country. In the UK and Ireland, Subway built a separate halal range for participating stores. Its UK allergen guide lists halal versions of meats such as chicken strips, turkey ham, turkey rashers, and beef-based pepperoni and salami [1].
In halal stores, pork products are swapped for turkey or beef versions. Reports from the mid-2010s put the number of halal Subway stores in the UK and Ireland at around 200 [2]. The count today may differ.
In the US, we found no chain-wide halal program or certification, and no US meats labeled halal. Expect a standard US store to handle conventional meats, including pork products, on one shared prep line. A 2006 report described a single franchisee who ran a halal Subway store [4], but that was an exception, not a policy.
Not every UK Subway is halal
A common mistake is to assume all UK Subways are halal. They are not. When the halal range expanded, Subway confirmed that stores in several towns, including Chesterfield, would keep the standard menu [3]. Halal status is chosen store by store.
Look for halal signage at the counter or in the window, and if you don't see any, ask. In a halal store, ham and bacon should be turkey-based products, and pepperoni and salami should be beef-based [1].
Also ask about the bread, sauces and cookies if you want to check every ingredient. The halal label covers the meats; other items can raise separate questions, such as flavorings.
How to check a Subway near you
Use these steps wherever you are:
- UK: Look for halal signage and use Subway's store finder to check the store. Ask staff to confirm the store serves only halal meats.
- US and Canada: Assume not certified. If a store claims halal, ask for a current certificate from a named certifier.
- Ask about cross-contact. In non-halal stores, the same knives, gloves and prep line can touch ham or bacon.
- Consider meatless subs. A veggie sub avoids the meat question, but it is still made on a shared line.
For the tuna sub specifically, see our page on Subway tuna. Most scholars treat fish as halal, but ask about the mayonnaise and the prep line.
Halal sandwich alternatives
In the US, other sandwich chains face the same question. Compare Jersey Mike's and Panera on HalalLookup. If you want turkey-based breakfast meat, our page on turkey bacon explains what to check on the label.
