Is Panda Express Halal?

Short answer Not certified

Panda Express is not halal certified in the United States or Canada. The company publishes nutrition and allergen details but no halal statement, and it says entrees are cooked on shared equipment [1][2]. Without a certificate or official statement, its chicken and beef can't be confirmed as halal. Check for a certificate abroad.

Halal status by country

CountryStatusDetailsSource
United States Not certified No halal statement or certification found. The company notes entrees are prepared with shared cooking equipment. [1][2]
Canada Not certified Panda Express operates in Canada with the same core menu. We found no halal statement or certification for Canadian restaurants. [3]

What Panda Express says, and what it doesn't

Panda Express publishes a detailed nutrition and allergen guide for its menu [1]. Its parent company's FAQ explains that ingredients include all the major FDA allergens and that, because entrees share cooking equipment, any dish could contain traces of others [2].

What neither page includes is a halal statement. We found no official Panda Express page saying its chicken, beef or shrimp is halal, and no listing with a US halal certifier. Without that, the honest status for US restaurants is "not certified."

The shared-equipment point matters too. Even if one protein came from a halal supplier, Panda Express cooks entrees in woks and on equipment shared across the menu [2]. For people who want a halal kitchen, not just halal meat, that is a separate question to weigh.

Canada and other countries

Panda Express runs restaurants in Canada and shares major menu programs across the US and Canada, such as its Panda Cub Meals for children [3]. We found no halal statement or certification for Canadian locations, so treat them the same as US restaurants.

The chain also has restaurants in the Gulf. Its first Dubai restaurant was covered by trade press when it opened [4]. Local franchise partners run those sites, and we did not find a public halal statement for them. If you visit a Panda Express in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, ask to see the halal certificate and the name of the certifier.

The key point: an answer from one country does not carry over to another. Each market can use different suppliers.

Sauces, cooking wine and other ingredients

Chinese-American cooking often uses sauces and seasonings that raise questions beyond the meat. Panda Express publishes its allergen grid [1], but allergen charts don't list every flavoring. If you want certainty, ask for the full ingredient statement for your dish.

Scholars hold different views on small amounts of alcohol used in cooking or flavorings, and on whether cooking changes them. Our guides on rice wine and alcohol as an ingredient set out the main positions neutrally.

Vegetable sides, rice and noodles avoid the meat question, but they are still made in the same kitchen as meat dishes [2].

How to check, and halal alternatives

If you're deciding whether to eat at Panda Express:

  • Look for a certificate. We know of no US or Canadian Panda Express with one. If a branch claims halal, ask for the certifier's name.
  • Ask about shared woks. Entrees are cooked on shared equipment [2].
  • Read the allergen guide. It lists what each dish contains [1].

Frequently asked questions

Is Panda Express chicken halal?

Panda Express has not said its chicken is halal, and we found no halal certification for its US or Canadian restaurants [1][2]. Orange Chicken and other chicken dishes should be treated as not certified unless a branch shows a halal certificate.

Is Panda Express halal in Canada?

We found no halal statement or certification for Panda Express in Canada, where it runs the same core menu as in the US [3]. Treat Canadian locations as not certified.

Does Panda Express use shared cooking equipment?

Yes. Panda Express says its entrees share cooking equipment, so ingredients from one dish can end up in another [2]. This matters if you avoid non-halal meat or want a fully halal kitchen.
