Is NAYA Halal?

Short answer Depends

It depends on what you order. NAYA's own FAQ lists its chicken shawarma as halal, but its other meats, including braised beef shawarma, chicken kebab and kafta lamb kebab, carry no halal label [1]. NAYA doesn't name a certifier. Falafel and cauliflower are vegan options [1]. Ask your location about any meat before ordering.

What NAYA says about halal

NAYA is a Lebanese fast-casual chain where you build bowls, salads and wraps from a choice of proteins. Its official FAQ lists six proteins, and only one carries a halal label: the chicken shawarma, shown as "Chicken Shawarma (halal)" [1].

The other meats are listed without that label: braised beef shawarma, chicken kebab and kafta lamb kebab [1]. That does not prove they are non-halal. It means NAYA has not said publicly that they are halal, so you can't confirm it from the brand's own information.

NAYA also does not name a halal certifier on its FAQ [1]. A label without a named certifier is a company statement, which many diners accept, while others want to see a certificate from a recognized body. Both approaches are common.

Beef, lamb and the chicken kebab

NAYA has promoted a partnership with the New York meat purveyor Pat LaFrieda for its beef and lamb [2]. The announcement focuses on quality, and we did not find a halal statement attached to it.

The chicken kebab is worth a separate question. It is a different product from the chicken shawarma, and only the shawarma is labeled halal [1]. If you want halal chicken, the shawarma is the item NAYA itself identifies.

If you're curious about the kafta or beef, ask the manager two questions: who supplies this meat, and is it halal certified? A clear answer with a certifier's name is the best you can get short of seeing a certificate.

Where NAYA operates and how to check

NAYA started in New York and its FAQ says it now has locations in several states, including Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania [1]. Sourcing can differ between locations, especially when a chain grows into new regions.

When you visit:

  • Order the labeled item. Chicken shawarma is the one NAYA lists as halal [1].
  • Ask about the others. Get the supplier and certifier for beef, lamb and chicken kebab.
  • Ask about the grill. If halal and non-labeled meats share a grill or knives, decide whether that matters to you.
  • Go meatless if unsure. Falafel and cauliflower are vegan proteins [1].

Halal labels vs. halal certificates

A menu label and a certificate are not the same thing. A halal label on a menu is the restaurant telling you how it sources an item. A certificate comes from an outside body that audits the supplier, and sometimes the kitchen, on a schedule.

NAYA's chicken shawarma has a label, but the FAQ doesn't say which certifier, if any, stands behind it [1]. Some diners are comfortable with a clear company statement. Others prefer to see a certificate and check the certifier's name. If you're in the second group, ask the manager whether the location keeps a copy of the supplier's halal certificate. Many restaurants can show one on request.

Similar halal-friendly chains

If you like NAYA's style, compare other Mediterranean fast-casual chains on HalalLookup: Cava, Mezeh, Naf Naf Grill and Luna Grill. Each handles halal sourcing differently, so it's worth checking item by item.
