Is Nash & Smash Halal?
Yes. Nash & Smashed, the hot chicken and smash burger chain from the DC area, labels its food halal on its official website [4], and local news says the whole menu is halal [1]. Some Maryland stores appear in news as "Nash & Smash" [3]. No certifier is named, so check your branch. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What Nash & Smash is
Nash & Smashed is a fast-casual chain that sells Nashville-style hot chicken and smash burgers. It opened its first restaurant in Manassas, Virginia, and grew quickly across the DC area. In August 2025, FFXnow reported seven open locations in Virginia, Maryland and DC, with 15 more in the works [1].
You will see the brand written two ways. Most news coverage says "Nash & Smashed" [1][2]. A Patch report on new Maryland stores in Ellicott City, Laurel and Abingdon uses "Nash & Smash" [3]. The chain's own locations page lists stores in Ellicott City, Abingdon, Silver Spring and District Heights, the same Maryland towns Patch named, so the two names point to the same brand [5]. Individual stores can still have different owners, so treat each branch on its own.
Why it is listed as halal
The brand's official website tags its food as halal in its headline and menu description [4]. Two local news outlets say the same. FFXnow said the chain has an entirely halal menu, which means the chicken and the beef, not just one item [1]. ARLnow described its fried chicken as halal when it reported on a new Arlington store on Glebe Road [2].
What the website and the reports do not say:
- Which certifier checks the meat or the kitchen.
- Whether the chicken is hand-slaughtered (zabiha) or machine-slaughtered.
- Whether stunning is used before slaughter.
Those details matter to many Muslims, and they are not in the public record we could find. That is why we say "halal as reported" and still ask you to check the certificate in the store. The official site also lists a restaurant in Canberra, Australia [5]. ARLnow mentioned plans in the UK too [2], but we could not confirm a UK store or its halal status.
How to check a Nash & Smash near you
Fast-growing chains add new owners and new suppliers often. A halal claim at one store does not always carry over to the next. Before you order:
- Look for a halal certificate on the wall or at the counter. It should name the certifier, the store address and an expiry date.
- Ask which certifier supplies the chicken and the beef. If you follow a specific standard, such as hand slaughter only, check that certifier's rules.
- Check new and express stores. FFXnow noted that the food truck and smaller express units run a slightly different menu from the main restaurants [1]. Ask if the halal policy is the same.
- Confirm the name. If a store uses a slightly different name or logo, ask whether it belongs to the same company.
If staff say "yes, it's halal" but cannot show a certificate, you can ask them to share the supplier's name. A real answer is easy to give.
Other hot chicken and burger options
Nashville hot chicken has become a crowded category, and halal status changes a lot between brands. See our pages on Dave's Hot Chicken, Angry Chickz and Howlin' Ray's for comparison.
For smash burgers, compare with Smashburger and Five Guys, which are large national chains with a different answer. Our guide to whether chicken is halal explains zabiha and machine slaughter in plain terms, so you know what to ask at the counter.
