What Jollibee says about halal in North America

Jollibee is direct about this in the US and Canada. Its menu FAQ says it does not guarantee any of its products to be halal or kosher [1]. The reasons it gives are practical: food suppliers and ingredient sources vary, kitchens share equipment, and halal certification has its own requirements [1]. Jollibee Canada's help center gives the same answer [2].

So the honest status for Chickenjoy and the rest of the menu in North America is "not certified." Jollibee also notes that its US chicken comes from USDA-approved facilities [1], but USDA approval is a food-safety standard, not a halal one.

Because no North American item is labeled halal, the same caution applies to every dish, from fried chicken to spaghetti, burgers and pies. If you have questions about a specific ingredient, ask the store for the full ingredient list before ordering.

Jollibee in the UK: some stores are halal

The UK picture is different. When Jollibee opened in Leicester in 2020, trade press reported it as the first Jollibee in the country to sell only halal meat [3]. Other UK stores have followed with halal menus, but not every branch has been halal at every point in time.

Because the answer is store by store, don't rely on the brand name alone:

  • Check the branch. Ask whether that store is fully halal or only serves some halal items.
  • Ask about every meat. Ask about chicken, beef and any processed meats, not just Chickenjoy.
  • Look for a certificate. A halal store should be able to name its certifier.

If a branch is halal, it should be happy to tell you which body certifies it.

Jollibee in Malaysia and Asia

In Malaysia, where JAKIM is the national halal authority, Jollibee's Kota Kinabalu store received official halal certification in 2019 [4]. JAKIM certification covers the outlet's ingredients, preparation and kitchen, not just the chicken.

For the Philippines, Jollibee's home market, and for its stores in the Gulf, we could not find an official Jollibee statement or certificate list. Some individual branches may hold local certificates, so check the certificate at the branch you visit rather than assuming either way.

When you travel, the rule is the same everywhere: the certificate on the wall matters more than the brand's reputation in another country.

Halal fried chicken alternatives in the US
