Is Holy Burger Halal?
Yes. Holy Burger is a New York burger chain built around halal beef [3]. The US certifier HMS lists at least two branches, Jersey City, NJ and Middletown, NY, as certified for all meat products [1][2]. Not every branch appears on the HMS list, so check the certificate at yours. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Why Holy Burger is considered halal
Holy Burger started as a burger shop in New York City and is now opening stores in other states. A Virginia TV report on its first Virginia location, in Henrico County, said its handcrafted burgers are made from 100% halal beef [3].
The stronger evidence comes from a certifier. HMS, a US halal certification body, has posted notices for two Holy Burger branches:
- Holy Burger Jersey City, NJ, certified as of June 18, 2025 [1].
- Holy Burger Middletown, NY, certified as of December 10, 2025 [2].
For both branches, HMS says all meat products are certified [1][2]. A certifier listing like this is more reliable than a sign in the window, because the certifier is the one checking the supply.
Every branch is checked on its own
Halal certification is usually granted to a specific restaurant at a specific address. The HMS notices name two branches, not the whole chain [1][2]. That does not mean other branches are not halal. It means you should check each one.
Holy Burger is growing fast. Recent news covers new or planned stores in Henrico County, Virginia [3] and in the Columbia Heights area of Washington, DC [4]. New stores can take time to complete their own certification. When you visit one:
- Look for a certificate with the certifier's name, the store address and a valid date.
- Ask which certifier covers the store if you do not see one posted.
- Check the certifier's website for a notice about that branch, like the HMS notices above.
The HMS notices say the meat products are certified [1][2]. If you also care about the fryer, sauces or desserts, ask the store what the certificate covers.
Watch out for similar names
"Holy Burger" is a common restaurant name, and several unrelated places around the world use it. Some of them are not halal. There are also other halal burger brands in New York with similar names.
To be sure you are at the right place, compare the logo and address with the chain's own listings, and look for a halal certificate in the store. A shared name is not proof of halal status.
The chain's menu runs from classic burgers to vegan and gluten-free options [4], so it can work for groups with mixed diets. Vegan items still share a kitchen with meat, so ask about the grill and fryer if that matters to you. If you are unsure whether a store is part of the chain, ask staff directly.
Other halal burger options
If there is no Holy Burger near you, compare other chains. Our pages on Five Guys, Shake Shack, Smashburger and 7th Street Burger cover their halal status. For hot chicken and smash burgers in the DC area, see Nash & Smash.
