Is Shake Shack Halal?
Shake Shack is not halal certified in the United States, and we found no official US halal statement. In the UK, Shake Shack says its beef and chicken are halal certified, though most UK kitchens are not fully halal [1]. Its Manchester Trafford Centre site is reported as fully halal [2], and Malaysia's outlets hold JAKIM certification [3].

Halal status by country
| Country | Status | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Not certified | No official halal statement or certification found for US restaurants. The halal sourcing statements we found are specific to the UK. | [1] |
| United Kingdom | Some items halal | Beef patties and chicken breast are halal certified as raw products, but kitchens are not exclusively halal and pork bacon is sold at most sites. The Trafford Centre, Manchester, opened in March 2026 as a fully halal-certified restaurant. | [1][2] |
| Malaysia | Halal | Outlets run in Malaysia received halal certification from JAKIM, reported in June 2026. | [3][4] |
Why Shake Shack is halal in some countries but not the US
Shake Shack's halal status depends on who supplies the meat in each country. In the UK, the company's own FAQ says its beef patty and its chicken breast are halal certified as raw products [1]. That is a sourcing decision made for the UK market.
In the US, we could not find any official Shake Shack statement saying its beef or chicken is halal, and no US halal certification for the chain. Until Shake Shack publishes one, the honest answer for US locations is "not certified." A burger chain can buy halal meat in one country and conventional meat in another, so a halal answer abroad does not carry over to your local Shack.
Malaysia is the clearest case. Local reports in June 2026 said Shake Shack Malaysia's outlets received halal certification from JAKIM, Malaysia's government halal authority [3][4]. JAKIM certification covers the whole outlet, not just the meat.
Shake Shack UK: halal meat, but not always a halal kitchen
In the UK there is an important difference between halal meat and a halal restaurant. Shake Shack UK says its beef and chicken are halal certified, but it also says it is not a fully halal-certified restaurant because some menu items are not halal [1]. The main example is bacon: most UK sites serve pork bacon, and the kitchens are not exclusively halal [1].
That means the patty itself may be halal while sharing a grill, tools or prep space with pork. Some people are comfortable ordering a halal patty without bacon; others want a fully halal kitchen. That choice is yours.
The exception is the Trafford Centre in Manchester. Trade press reported in March 2026 that it opened as the brand's first fully halal-certified UK restaurant, with halal bacon and beef hot dogs and no alcohol in the kitchen [2]. The report did not name the certifier, so check the certificate on site.
How to check a Shake Shack near you
Because the rules change by country and even by site, check before you order:
- Look for a certificate. A halal-certified restaurant should display a current certificate from a named certifier. Check the name and the expiry date.
- Ask what is halal. In the UK, ask whether your site is fully halal (like the Trafford Centre) or only uses halal beef and chicken.
- Ask about bacon and shared grills. If pork bacon is on the menu, ask whether it is cooked on the same flat-top as the burgers.
- In the US, assume not certified. Unless a US location shows its own certificate, treat the meat as conventional.
In the Gulf, Shake Shack restaurants are run by the franchise group Alshaya [5]. We could not find a public halal statement for those sites, so check the certificate locally too.
Halal burger alternatives
If you're in the US and want a certified halal burger, Shake Shack is not a reliable option right now. Compare it with other burger chains on HalalLookup, such as Five Guys, In-N-Out and McDonald's, where the answer also changes by country.
For chicken, see KFC and Popeyes. Many cities also have independent halal burger shops with a posted certificate, which is often the simplest route.
