Is Catfish Halal? Sunni and Shia Views Explained
For Sunni Muslims, yes. Catfish is a fish, and fish is halal in all four Sunni schools [3][4]. For Shia Muslims who follow Ja'fari rulings, no. Those rulings allow only fish with scales [5], and catfish have no scales [6]. Fried catfish should also be checked for batter and shared fryers. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Why catfish is halal for Sunni Muslims
The Qur'an makes the game of the sea and its food lawful [1]. A well-known hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud describes sea water as pure and what dies in it as lawful [2]. Scholars apply these texts to fish from rivers and lakes as well as the sea.
The Sunni schools disagree about shellfish, squid and crabs, but they agree on fish. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools allow all sea creatures [3]. The Hanafi school is the strictest, but it says all types of fish are halal [4]. Catfish is a fish, so it is halal in all four schools.
The Sunni schools do not require fish to have scales. Catfish looks unusual, with whiskers and smooth skin, but that does not change its status as fish.
Why Ja'fari rulings do not allow catfish
Ja'fari law sets a different test for fish. Rulings from the office of Ayatollah Sistani allow only fish that have scales. Fish without scales are not allowed. If you are unsure whether a fish has scales, the rulings say not to eat it [5].
Catfish fail this test. The whole catfish order lacks scales. Their bodies have either bare skin or bony plates [6]. So catfish is not allowed for Muslims who follow these rulings.
This is the main reason catfish is a common question. A Sunni and a Shia Muslim can sit at the same table and reach different answers, both based on their own school.
The Hanafi floating-fish rule
Hanafi scholars exclude one kind of fish: a fish that dies naturally in the water, with no outside cause, and floats to the surface [4]. This applies to any species, not only catfish. Farmed and caught catfish are harvested alive, so the rule does not usually affect what you buy in a store.
Catfish in the US
Catfish is a major farmed fish in the US. Farming is concentrated in the South, with Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas as the largest producers [6]. You will find it as fillets, nuggets and whole fish in grocery stores, and fried at Southern restaurants and fish fry events.
Farm-raised catfish is still fish. Fish needs no slaughter, so the farmer or seller does not need to be Muslim for Sunni Muslims [1][2].
Fried catfish: what to check
Catfish is usually dredged in cornmeal and deep-fried. The coating is normally simple, but ask about:
- Beer batter. Some restaurants use it. See beer battered fish.
- Shared fryers. Fish fry spots often fry everything in the same oil, which may include pork items.
- Sides. Southern sides like greens and beans are often cooked with bacon, ham hocks or other pork.
- Frozen breaded catfish. Read the label for seasonings.
If you follow Ja'fari rulings, ask which fish is used in any fish fry or mixed seafood platter. Scaled choices such as tilapia and salmon are covered on their own pages.
