Why classic Welch's Fruit Snacks are not halal
Welch's Fruit Snacks get their soft, chewy bite from gelatin. Welch's answers the question directly in its FAQ. It says it uses either pork or beef gelatin in Welch's Fruit Snacks, Juicefuls and Fusions [1]. The ingredient list for the Mixed Fruit flavor shows gelatin right after modified corn starch [2].
The pack does not tell you which animal the gelatin in your box came from. Since pork is one of the two possible sources, you can't treat any classic box as pork-free. Even the beef option is not described as halal-slaughtered. That is why we list classic Welch's Fruit Snacks as not halal.
This applies to all the classic flavors in the same line, such as Mixed Fruit, Berries 'n Cherries and Concord Grape, because the FAQ answer covers the Fruit Snacks line as a whole [1].
The Welch's snacks that are halal compliant
There is good news. Welch's names three products in its lineup as halal compliant [1]:
- Welch's Absolute Fruitfuls Fruit Strips
- Welch's Probiotic Yogofruits
- Welch's Fruit Rolls
Fruitfuls Fruit Strips and Fruit Rolls are also listed as vegan [1].
Welch's Fruit 'n Yogurt Snacks are a special case. Welch's says they are free of animal-derived gelatin, but they are not on its halal-compliant list [1]. Treat them as not confirmed.
Welch's does not say which certifier, if any, stands behind the halal-compliant wording. If you follow a strict standard, look on the pack for a certifier's logo, or contact Welch's and ask.
Other ingredients worth knowing
The Mixed Fruit ingredient list also includes natural and artificial flavors and carnauba wax [2]. Carnauba wax comes from palm leaves. The flavors don't state whether alcohol was used as a carrier, which is common for US labels. See our alcohol (ethanol) page for how scholars view trace alcohol.
Welch's says all its fruit snack lines are now colored with colors from natural sources, without artificial dyes like Red 40 [2]. On the Mixed Fruit pack, the colors are annatto, turmeric and fruit and vegetable juice [2]. None of these is carmine, the insect-based red. If you see a different list on your box, check our carmine page.
Recipes change, so read the label each time.
What scholars say about gelatin
Gelatin from pork is generally rejected because the source animal is forbidden. Gelatin from cattle that were not slaughtered the Islamic way is debated. Some scholars accept it based on istihalah, the idea that processing fully changes the substance, while many others and most halal certifiers do not. Our gelatin page explains these views in more detail.
With classic Welch's, this debate matters less, because pork may be the source and the box doesn't tell you which one you have [1].
Other fruit snacks to compare
Fruit snacks without gelatin are easier to check. See our pages on Gushers, Fruit Roll-Ups and Fruit by the Foot. For a general guide, read are fruit snacks halal.
