Is Wagyu Halal? Breed, Grade and Slaughter Explained
Wagyu is beef from Japanese cattle breeds, so it can be halal [1][2]. But the breed and the A5 grade say nothing about how the animal was slaughtered. Wagyu is only halal when the cow was slaughtered Islamically, with God's name said over it [3][4]. In the US, buy wagyu that names a halal certifier, or ask the seller.

What the schools of thought say
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| All four Sunni schools | Cattle are halal animals. The Hanafi list of permitted animals names cow and buffalo, and treats non-predatory livestock as permissible. | [2] |
| Permissive view on supermarket meat | Meat slaughtered by Jews and Christians is permissible when slaughtered properly, and treated as permissible by default when the method is unknown. | [5][6] |
| Hanafi (cautious view on supermarket meat) | God's name must be consciously said and the throat cut properly. If that can't be confirmed, this answer advises avoiding the meat. | [7] |
What wagyu is
"Wagyu" means "Japanese cattle." It is not one breed but four: Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Polled and Japanese Shorthorn [1]. Japanese Black makes up over 97% of Japan's beef cattle and is the main source of the heavily marbled beef people know [1].
Japan grades beef on yield (A to C) and meat quality (5 to 1). A5 is the top grade on both scales [1].
Outside Japan, the word is used more loosely. In the US, USDA allows cattle with at least 46.875% wagyu genetics to be called wagyu, and terms like "American-Style Kobe Beef" are also used [1]. Australia farms both fullblood and crossbred wagyu [1].
Why the breed doesn't decide halal status
Cattle are halal animals [2], so wagyu is not a special case. Like any beef, what matters is the slaughter.
The Qur'an forbids carrion, blood, pork and animals killed by a blow or a fall [3]. It also tells believers not to eat meat over which God's name was not said [4]. A wagyu steak from a cow that was not slaughtered Islamically raises the same question as any other steak.
Scholars differ on beef slaughtered by Jews and Christians. One view allows it when the method is proper, and by default when it is unknown [5][6]. A Hanafi answer from SeekersGuidance advises avoiding meat when proper slaughter can't be confirmed [7].
Stunning is a second debate. Some certifiers accept stunning under conditions. The UK's Halal Monitoring Committee rejects it in any form, including captive bolt stunning, partly because a stunned animal may die before the cut and become carrion [11]. If this matters to you, ask the certifier whether the cattle were stunned.
How to find halal wagyu in the US
- Look for a named certifier. USDA does not define halal. A 2025 petition asked FSIS to define "zabiha halal" as hand-slaughtered without stunning [8].
- Check the chain of custody. Halal Monitoring Services (HMS) certifies only hand-slaughtered meat and checks from slaughterhouse to store [9].
- Imported wagyu. Wagyu is also farmed in Australia [1]. For beef imported from there, HMS publishes a list of approved meat plants in Australia and New Zealand, which can help you check an imported product [10].
- Ask the butcher. Premium beef often passes through several hands. Ask who certified it and whether the certificate covers the cut you are buying.
Wagyu at restaurants
Wagyu shows up on steakhouse menus, in burgers and in Japanese grills. At a restaurant, the halal question has three parts:
- The supplier. Ask whether the wagyu itself is halal certified, not just the chicken or lamb on the menu.
- Sauces and marinades. Steak sauces and Japanese glazes can contain wine, sake or mirin.
- Shared grills. Ask whether pork is cooked on the same grill.
For related cuts, see steak and brisket.
Frequently asked questions
Is A5 wagyu halal?
Is American wagyu halal?
The same rule applies. American wagyu is often crossbred cattle, labeled wagyu if it has at least 46.875% wagyu genetics [1]. Its halal status depends on the slaughter and the certifier, not the breed. Look for a named halal certifier.
