Is Steak Halal? Zabiha Beef, Steakhouses and Marinades

Short answer Depends

Steak comes from cattle, which are halal animals, so steak can be halal [4]. It is only halal when the cow was slaughtered properly with God's name said [2], and when it isn't cooked with wine, beer or pork fat. Most US supermarket and steakhouse beef is not halal certified, so look for a named certifier.

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
All schools Cattle are halal animals. Beef is halal when the animal is slaughtered properly with God's name invoked. [1][2][4]
Hanafi (SeekersGuidance) Meat from Jews and Christians is valid only when God's name is invoked and the throat is cut properly; ordinary US beef whose slaughter can't be verified should be avoided. [5]
Permissive view on supermarket meat (IslamQA) Meat from the People of the Book is permissible when properly slaughtered, and unknown cases are treated as permissible by default. [3][6]

Why steak can be halal

Ribeye, sirloin, T-bone and filet mignon are all cuts of beef. Cattle are halal animals in every school [4]. The Qur'an forbids carrion, blood, pork and animals dedicated to other than God [1], and it tells believers not to eat meat over which God's name was not said [2].

So the cut does not matter. What matters is how the cow was slaughtered, and what the steak was cooked with. Our beef page covers the slaughter rules in more depth.

Supermarket steak in the US

Regular US supermarket steak carries no halal claim. Whether you eat it depends on which scholarly view you follow:

  • One view says meat from Jews and Christians is permissible when properly slaughtered, and treats unknown cases as permissible by default [6]. It relies on the Qur'an's permission for the food of the People of the Book [3].
  • A stricter Hanafi view requires that God's name be said and the throat vessels be cut. It advises avoiding meat when that can't be confirmed [5].

If you want certainty, buy steak with a named halal certifier on the pack. Halal Monitoring Services (HMS) certifies only hand-slaughtered meat and checks the chain from slaughter to store [7]. There is no federal definition of halal in the US, so the certifier's name is what gives a label meaning [8].

Steakhouses and restaurants

Most American steakhouse chains don't advertise halal beef. See our Outback Steakhouse page for one example. Some independent steakhouses in cities with large Muslim communities do serve certified beef. Ask to see the current certificate and the certifier's name.

Even with halal beef, check the kitchen:

  • Butter basting is fine. Bacon fat or lard is not.
  • Shared grills may also cook pork chops or bacon-wrapped filets.
  • Sauces like red wine reduction, bordelaise or peppercorn sauce with brandy contain alcohol.

Wine and beer marinades

Many steak recipes use red wine or beer in marinades and pan sauces. People often say the alcohol cooks off, but USDA data shows otherwise. Alcohol stirred into a hot sauce and taken off the heat keeps 85% of its alcohol, and even an hour of simmering leaves about 25% [9].

An Islamweb fatwa holds that cooking with an intoxicating wine is forbidden, and the food stays impure even if the alcohol leaves during cooking [10]. Use broth, pomegranate molasses or lemon juice instead. Our cooking wine page covers this in detail.

Wagyu, Angus and other labels

Labels like Angus, Prime, grass-fed, organic or wagyu describe breed, grade or farming. None of them say anything about halal slaughter. A wagyu ribeye is only halal if it was slaughtered properly and certified. See our wagyu page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ribeye steak halal?

A ribeye is beef, and cattle are halal animals [4]. It is halal when the cow was slaughtered the Islamic way with God's name said [2], and when it isn't cooked with wine or pork fat. Look for a certifier's name.

Is steak from Costco or Walmart halal?

Regular supermarket steak is not halal certified. Some scholars allow meat from Jews and Christians [6], while others advise avoiding it when the slaughter can't be verified [5]. Look for packs that name a halal certifier.

Is steak cooked in red wine halal?

Most answers say no. Cooking leaves much of the alcohol in the food [9], and Islamweb holds that food cooked with an intoxicating wine stays impure even if the alcohol leaves [10]. Ask for the sauce on the side or skip it.

Are steakhouses halal?

Most US steakhouse chains are not halal certified. Some independent steakhouses serve certified beef. Ask for the certificate and the certifier's name, and check for shared grills and wine-based sauces [8].
