Is Starbucks Halal?
It depends on the country. Starbucks in the US and UK publishes no halal certification [1][4]. In Singapore, the religious council MUIS said in 2026 that Starbucks had not applied for halal certification [6]. In Malaysia, Starbucks says its food and drinks are halal certified by JAKIM [8]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Why Starbucks is halal in Malaysia but not certified in the US
Starbucks runs or licenses stores in many countries, and each market decides whether to seek halal certification. That is why the answer changes when you cross a border.
In Malaysia, Starbucks has said many times that its food and drinks are certified halal by JAKIM, the national Islamic affairs department [8]. Rumors that Starbucks lost its halal status have gone viral again and again. Each time, JAKIM has said the certificate was never suspended or revoked [7][8].
In the US, the official Starbucks website and menu do not mention halal at all [1][2]. With no official statement and no certifier listing, the honest answer for the US is "not certified." That does not mean every drink is haram. It means no one has checked the full menu for you.
The 2026 Singapore sign and the "pet ban" rumor
In May 2026, a sign at a Starbucks in Singapore talked about a move toward halal-certified operations and changes to pet rules. Photos spread online with claims that Starbucks was banning pets in the US, UK and Ireland to become halal certified.
Fact-checkers looked into it. Starbucks said the sign was posted in error, that it appeared only in Singapore, and that its pet policies had not changed [3]. Starbucks UK said the claim was not accurate for the UK [4].
Singapore's Islamic Religious Council, MUIS, then asked Starbucks to remove or amend signs that mentioned halal certification. MUIS said it had not received any halal certification application from Starbucks [6]. So, as of our last check, Starbucks in Singapore is not halal certified.
What to check when you order at a non-certified Starbucks
Where Starbucks is not certified, you have to judge each item yourself. Plain brewed coffee, espresso and tea start from simple plant ingredients. See our coffee page for the basics. The questions usually come from what gets added.
- Syrups, sauces and toppings. Ask for the ingredient list, and look for alcohol-based flavorings or colors from insects.
- Bakery items. Look for gelatin, lard or other animal fats. Our gelatin page explains the different views.
- Hot sandwiches. Check whether the sandwich has meat such as bacon or sausage. Even chicken or beef items are not halal unless a certifier says so.
- Shared equipment. Ovens and utensils are usually shared across all food items.
In any country, if a store says it is halal, ask to see the certificate. Check that it names a recognized certifier, that store's address and an expiry date.
Coffee and café alternatives
If you want to compare other chains, see our pages on Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme. If you like sweet tea drinks, our bubble tea page covers common toppings that may contain gelatin.
In many US cities, local cafés run by Muslim owners display a halal certificate for their food. That can be the simplest option if you also want a sandwich or pastry.
