Is Dunkin' Halal?

Short answer Varies by country

Dunkin' is not halal certified in the United States, and its US menu includes pork sausage and bacon [1][2]. In Indonesia, Dunkin' holds a government halal certificate and has been certified since 1997 [3]. In the UK and Canada, no halal certification is confirmed. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Why Dunkin' is not halal in the US

In the US, Dunkin' is best known for coffee and donuts, but it also sells breakfast sandwiches. The breakfast sausage used in those sandwiches is made from pork [1]. Dunkin' has also sold Snackin' Bacon, a side of glazed bacon slices, at shops nationwide [2].

Pork on the menu is a big part of the US answer. Dunkin' expects its shops to sell the full approved menu. In 2007, a Muslim franchisee who had run Dunkin' shops for almost 30 years faced losing his franchise after refusing to sell pork sandwiches [6]. That case shows how central these items are to the US business.

There is no halal certificate for US Dunkin' shops. So the honest answer is "not certified." This does not mean every item contains pork. It means no one has checked the menu and kitchen against halal standards for you.

Donuts and drinks in the US

Many people only want a donut or a coffee, not a sandwich. These items do not contain meat, but they are still not certified. Two things are worth knowing:

  • Shared kitchens. Donuts and sandwiches are prepared in the same shop, often by the same staff.
  • Ingredients that need checking. Some fillings, flavorings and toppings can contain gelatin or flavorings made with alcohol. Scholars differ on some of these ingredients, so check the current ingredient list in the Dunkin' app or ask the shop.

Plain hot coffee is the simplest choice. Our page on whether coffee is halal covers the basics. For a closer look at one popular drink topping, see our page on Dunkin' marshmallow cold foam.

Dunkin' in Indonesia: fully halal certified

Dunkin' is run by different companies in different countries. In Indonesia, the operator is PT Dunkindo Lestari. In April 2024, it received a halal certificate from BPJPH, Indonesia's government halal agency [3]. The certificate stays valid as long as the ingredients and production process do not change [3].

The same report says Dunkin' Indonesia has been halal certified since 1997 [3]. So a Dunkin' in Jakarta and a Dunkin' in New Jersey can have very different halal status, even though they share a name and logo.

Dunkin' in the UK and Canada

In the UK, Dunkin' is run by QFM Group under a license. In 2023 it had about 30 UK shops, mostly in northern England, with plans to grow [4]. We found no halal certificate covering UK Dunkin' shops. If your local shop says it is halal, ask to see the certificate.

In Canada, Dunkin' left the market years ago. In 2026, news coverage reported that Dunkin' is returning to Canada [5]. No halal policy for the new Canadian shops had been published when we checked.

How to check a Dunkin' near you

Use these steps in any country:

  1. Look for a halal certificate that names the certifier, the shop and an expiry date.
  2. Ask what the certificate covers. Is it the whole menu, or only some items?
  3. Skip the meat sandwiches in the US unless a certificate says otherwise. The sausage is pork [1].
  4. Check the donut ingredients in the app or with staff if gelatin or alcohol-based flavorings concern you.
