Are Sour Patch Kids Halal?

Short answer Not certified

Sour Patch Kids sold in the US are not halal certified, but their ingredient list has no gelatin or animal-based ingredients [1][2]. They are made from sugar, invert sugar, corn syrup, modified corn starch, acids, flavors and colors. Many Muslims eat them on that basis; others want certification. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What is in US Sour Patch Kids

Mondelez lists the ingredients of the original US Sour Patch Kids as sugar, invert sugar, corn syrup, modified corn starch, tartaric acid, citric acid, natural and artificial flavor, and synthetic colors such as Red 40 and Yellow 5 [1]. The Watermelon version is similar and adds titanium dioxide for color [2].

The key point: there is no gelatin. Sour Patch Kids get their chew from modified corn starch, not from an animal-based gelling agent. That sets them apart from many gummy candies, such as some Trolli and Haribo products.

Why they are still listed as not certified

No animal ingredients is not the same as halal certified. Mondelez says it decides market by market whether to seek halal certification, uses outside agencies for it, and asks shoppers to read the label [3]. We found no halal certification for Sour Patch Kids in the US.

A few questions remain open for those who want full certainty:

  • Natural flavor. Labels do not say whether alcohol was used to carry the flavor. Scholars differ on trace alcohol from processing. See alcohol and ethanol.
  • Shared equipment. Labels don't show what else runs on the same lines.
  • New flavors. Limited editions may add new ingredients.

Many Muslims eat Sour Patch Kids based on the ingredients. Others only eat certified candy. Both are common choices.

A note on tartaric acid and colors

Sour Patch Kids get their sour coating from tartaric and citric acid [1]. Some shoppers ask about tartaric acid because it is often made from by-products of winemaking. It contains no alcohol, and many scholars treat it as a separate substance under istihalah, the principle that a full change in nature changes the ruling. Others prefer to avoid anything linked to wine production. We explain the views on our cream of tartar page.

The colors in US Sour Patch Kids, such as Red 40, Yellow 5 and Blue 1, are synthetic [1]. They are not made from insects, so the carmine question does not apply to the US recipe. See Red 40 for more.

Other countries and new flavors

Sour Patch Kids are sold in Canada, the UK and other countries, sometimes from different factories. We could not find official ingredient pages or halal statements for those markets, so we can't confirm whether their recipes match the US one.

If you are outside the US, or buying an imported bag:

  1. Read the ingredients for gelatin or carmine (E120).
  2. Check the country of manufacture.
  3. Look for a halal logo if you only eat certified candy.

The same applies to spin-offs like Sour Patch Kids Extreme, Tropical, Lemonade Fest or cereal and ice cream tie-ins. Each is a separate product with its own label. Our Sour Patch Watermelon page covers that flavor.
