Is Frog Halal? Frog Legs and the Four Schools
Most scholars say frog is not halal. The Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools forbid it, and the Ja'fari school allows only scaled fish from water animals [2][3][5]. The Maliki school permits frogs [1]. The main evidence is a hadith in which the Prophet forbade killing frogs for medicine [1].

What the schools of thought say
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Not permitted. Of water animals, only fish may be eaten, and frogs are excluded. | [2][5] |
| Maliki | Permitted. Imam Malik and those who agree with him allow eating frogs, based on the general verse on water game. | [1][4] |
| Shafi'i | Not permitted. Frogs live on land and in water and are named as forbidden, partly because they are considered filthy. | [2] |
| Hanbali | Not permitted. Imam Ahmad forbids frogs, relying on the hadith that prohibits killing them. | [1] |
| Ja'fari | Not permitted. Only fish with scales are halal among water animals; other water creatures are forbidden. | [3] |
Why scholars disagree about frogs
The Qur'an allows the game of the sea and its food [4]. Some scholars read this broadly and include frogs, since frogs live in water. Others say frogs are not truly sea animals because they live on both land and water [2].
The key text is a hadith. A doctor asked the Prophet about using a frog in medicine, and the Prophet forbade killing frogs [1]. Scholars who forbid eating frogs reason that if an animal may not be killed, it may not be eaten, because eating requires killing it first [1]. Al-Hakim graded this narration authentic, and al-Bayhaqi called it the strongest report on frogs, though one narrator was criticized [1].
What each school says
The majority view: not halal. The Shafi'i school names frogs among the land-and-water animals that may not be eaten, along with crocodiles [2]. The Hanafi school allows only fish from the water, so frogs are out [2][5]. Imam Ahmad forbids frogs as well [1].
The Maliki view: permitted. Imam Malik and those who follow him allow frogs [1]. They rely on the general wording of the Qur'an on water game and the hadith that the dead animals of the sea are lawful [1][4].
The Ja'fari view: not halal. Ayatollah Sistani's office says only fish with scales are halal, and other water animals are forbidden [3]. A frog is not a fish, so it falls outside what is allowed.
If you follow a school, its ruling is your answer. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.
Frog legs at restaurants
Frog legs show up on French, Cajun, Chinese and Southeast Asian menus in the US. Even for Malikis who allow frog, the dish itself needs a check:
- Cooking fat. Classic French frog legs are often sauteed in butter, which is fine, but some kitchens use bacon fat or lard.
- Wine. Many recipes add white wine to the sauce. Cooking does not remove all alcohol. USDA data shows 40% of alcohol remains after 15 minutes of simmering [6].
- Shared fryers. Cajun-style fried frog legs may share oil with pork items.
Ask the server what the dish is cooked in. For other land-and-water animals, see our crocodile and alligator pages.
Related animals: toads and turtles
Toads are treated like frogs in the same discussion, and many are also poisonous, which is another reason scholars give for avoiding them [2]. The same Malaysian fatwa lists turtles, snakes and scorpions among animals that are not eaten in the Shafi'i school [2]. See our turtle and snails pages for those questions, and seafood for the wider debate about water animals.
