Is the Costco Hot Dog Halal?

Short answer Not certified

No. The Costco food court hot dog is a Kirkland Signature all-beef frank, so it has no pork [1][2]. But it is not halal certified, and the product listing shows no halal or kosher certification [3]. It has not been kosher since Costco stopped using Hebrew National around 2009 [1][2]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Who makes the Costco hot dog

The famous Costco food court hot dog comes from Costco's own label, Kirkland Signature. It is the same Kirkland beef hot dog that Costco sells in the refrigerated section [1]. Costco makes these franks in its own meat plants in Tracy, California, and Morris, Illinois [2].

Costco sells a huge number of them, about 100 million a year by one count, and the hot dog and soda combo costs $1.50 [4]. That fame is why so many Muslim shoppers ask whether it is halal.

Because Costco makes the franks itself, there is one supplier to ask about, not dozens. That makes the answer simpler than at chains where each franchise buys its own meat. The question is not who makes it, but how the beef was slaughtered, and Costco has not published a halal claim for it.

All beef, but not halal certified

The good news is that the hot dog is beef only. Costco describes its franks as 100% beef [1], and they are made with USDA-inspected beef [2]. The Kirkland listing also says there are no by-products, corn syrup or fillers [3]. So there is no pork in the recipe.

But "all beef" is not the same as halal. For beef to be halal, the cow must be slaughtered according to Islamic rules. The Kirkland listing names no halal certifier and shows no halal or kosher symbol [3]. We also found no Costco statement that the beef is halal. So the honest answer is "not certified."

Why it is no longer kosher

Some Muslims used to choose the Costco hot dog because it was kosher. That is no longer true.

Costco's food court franks were first supplied by national kosher brands, including Hebrew National [1][2]. Around 2008 and 2009, Costco switched to making its own Kirkland franks [1][2]. Since then, the hot dogs have not been kosher [1][2]. They are larger, at about 4.4 ounces [2], but they lost the kosher status that some Muslims relied on.

Scholars differ on whether kosher meat is acceptable for Muslims. Our kosher vs halal page explains the views. Either way, the Costco hot dog today is neither kosher nor halal certified.

What to do at the food court

  1. Treat the hot dog as not certified. It is all beef, but the slaughter is not certified.
  2. Check other countries locally. Costco menus and suppliers vary abroad, and we could not confirm a halal hot dog outside the US. Ask the food court staff.
  3. Look at the pizza too. See our Costco pizza page.
  4. Buy certified franks for home. If you want a beef hot dog, look in the store for packs with a halal certifier's logo, and read our Hebrew National page for how kosher franks compare.
