Is Tillamook Halal? Cheese, Ice Cream & Yogurt

Short answer Depends

It depends on the product. Tillamook says most of its cheeses are halal certified, and look for the halal symbol on the pack [2]. Its cheese uses a fermentation-made rennet with halal certification [1]. Tillamook ice cream, yogurt, sour cream, butter and cream cheese spreads are not halal certified [2]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Tillamook cheese and halal certification

Tillamook is an Oregon dairy co-op best known for its cheddar. For its cheese, the halal answer is mostly yes. Tillamook says the majority of its cheeses are halal certified, and that you can check the package for a halal certification symbol [2].

The key ingredient is rennet, the enzyme that sets milk into cheese. Traditional rennet comes from calves, which raises halal questions when the animal was not slaughtered Islamically. Tillamook says that since 2016 it has used a fermentation-produced rennet that has kosher and halal certification and is vegetarian [1]. Its cheddar has four ingredients: cultured milk, enzymes (rennet), salt and annatto, a plant-based color [1].

There is one clear exception. Tillamook says its Maker's Reserve 10-Year Extra Sharp Cheddar is made with animal rennet, and it is the only Tillamook cheese that is not vegetarian [1]. Skip it unless you know the rennet source is acceptable to you. Our rennet page explains the scholarly views.

Tillamook ice cream: not certified, and one has pork

Tillamook says its ice cream is not halal certified [2]. Two details matter:

  • Rocky Road contains pork gelatin. Tillamook says Rocky Road has marshmallows made with pork gelatin [3]. All its other ice creams are vegetarian [3].
  • Trace alcohol. Tillamook lists many Family Size and Pint flavors, such as French Vanilla, Cookies and Cream and Vanilla Bean, as having a trace amount of alcohol in the recipe. It says all of its ice cream sandwiches do too [3].

Tillamook doesn't say where the trace alcohol comes from. Scholars differ on trace alcohol in foods, especially when it is used to carry flavors. See our alcohol (ethanol) and vanilla extract pages, and our page on Tillamook ice cream.

Yogurt, sour cream, butter and cream cheese

Tillamook says its yogurt, sour cream, butter and cream cheese spreads do not have halal certification, but all of them are vegetarian [2]. That means no gelatin or other meat-based ingredients.

The yogurt has the same trace-alcohol issue as some ice creams. Tillamook says all of its yogurts contain a trace amount of alcohol in the recipe [4]. Its frozen meals are not halal certified and sometimes contain meat [2].

So for these products, you have no certificate to rely on. Your choice depends on how you view uncertified dairy and trace alcohol from flavorings.

How to check a Tillamook pack

  1. Look for the halal symbol. Tillamook tells shoppers to check cheese packaging for a halal certification symbol [2]. No symbol means you can't assume certification for that pack.
  2. Avoid Maker's Reserve 10-Year if you avoid animal rennet [1].
  3. Skip Rocky Road if you avoid pork gelatin [3].
  4. Check Tillamook's trace-alcohol lists for ice cream and yogurt if you avoid trace alcohol [3][4].

Recipes and certifications can change, so read the current label each time. For other cheese brands, compare Sargento and Kraft cheese, or read our guide to cheese.
