Why Oreo says one thing in the US and another in the Gulf

Oreos are baked in many countries. Mondelez, the company behind Oreo, decides market by market whether to seek halal certification, and it uses outside agencies to certify [4].

That is why the answer changes by country. In 2019, an Oreo social media post said its cookies were not halal certified. The post was meant for the US and Canada, but it spread widely without that context [3]. Mondelez then said Oreos sold in the Gulf are halal, are made in the GCC, and follow local rules [3].

In 2023 the rumor came back, along with claims that Oreos contain pork fat and alcohol. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment rejected those claims. It said lab tests found no animal-origin fats in the biscuits [2].

Oreos in the US and Canada

Oreos in the US and Canada are not halal certified [2][3]. Not certified does not mean they contain pork. It means no halal agency has checked the factory and suppliers.

When you look at a US pack, check for:

  • Animal fats or gelatin. Read the oil and filling ingredients for the exact flavor you buy.
  • Flavorings. Labels list vanillin or natural flavors without saying how they were made. Some Muslims ask about alcohol used in flavor extracts. See our vanilla extract page.
  • Special editions. Limited flavors can add new fillings or coatings. Read every new label.

Many Muslims in North America eat standard Oreos based on the ingredients. Others choose only certified snacks. Both are common choices.

Oreos in the UK and Europe

Oreo's UK FAQ says biscuits made in Europe are not halal certified. It adds that their recipe and production do not make them unsuitable for a Muslim diet [1].

The FAQ lists exceptions that it does not consider suitable [1]:

  • Oreo Strawberry Cheesecake
  • Oreo Choc'o Brownie
  • Oreo Enrobed Milk & White
  • Oreo Cadbury Coated
  • Oreo Crunchy Bites Dipped

The same FAQ says Oreo products are suitable for vegetarians [1]. If you buy any of the exception flavors, check the label and contact Mondelez UK for details.

How to check the pack you have

Mondelez advises shoppers to read the ingredients and label to decide whether a product fits their diet [4]. In practice:

  1. Find the country of manufacture on the back of the pack.
  2. Look for a halal logo. Gulf-made Oreos are the most likely to carry one.
  3. Read the ingredients for gelatin, animal fat, or alcohol-based flavors.
  4. Check flavor names against Oreo's UK exception list if you are in Europe.

Recipes change, so check the current package label each time. For other cookies, see Chips Ahoy and our general cookies guide.
