Is Magnum Ice Cream Halal?

Magnum is a chocolate-coated ice cream bar sold around the world. In the US, we found no halal certification and no halal statement from the brand. US Magnum bars are sold as kosher dairy products ^[2].

Kosher is not the same as halal. A kosher dairy mark tells you the bar is not meant to contain meat. It does not cover alcohol, and kosher rules on some ingredients differ from halal rules. See kosher vs halal for the main differences.

That means the US answer is not certified. The main ingredients, such as milk, cream, sugar, cocoa butter and chocolate, are halal by nature. The questions are about a few minor ingredients, covered below.

Most Magnum bars do not contain gelatin, but a few ingredients can raise questions:

• Emulsifiers. Mono and diglycerides (E471) help the ice cream stay smooth. They can come from plant or animal fat, and the label usually does not say which. See are mono and diglycerides halal?.
• Vanilla and other flavors. Vanilla extract is made with alcohol. Many scholars accept tiny carrier traces and some do not. See is vanilla extract halal?.
• Colors. Pink or red flavors may use carmine, a red color made from insects. See is carmine halal?.
• Limited editions. Some special flavors add liqueur-style or dessert-inspired swirls. Read the label for any alcoholic drink.

Recipes change, so check the ingredient list on the box you buy.

Magnum has been the subject of halal rumors in Malaysia. In 2019, a Malaysian news site reported that JAKIM, the country's halal authority, listed Magnum among foods people often argue about ^[1]. JAKIM said Magnum holds a foreign halal certificate that it recognizes, issued by Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) and the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand (CICOT) ^[1].

JAKIM also advised shoppers to choose ice cream that carries a Malaysian halal logo or a foreign halal logo that JAKIM recognizes ^[1]. This is good advice anywhere. A logo printed on the box is the clearest sign of certification for that batch.

This status applies to Magnum made for those markets. It does not make the US product halal certified, because US bars are made for a different market under different rules.

Here is a simple way to decide:

1. Look for a halal logo from a recognized certifier on the box. If you see one, that product is certified.
2. If there is no logo, read the ingredient list. Look for emulsifiers of unknown source, alcohol-based flavors and carmine.
3. Decide based on your own standard. Some Muslims eat uncertified dairy ice cream with no clear haram ingredient. Others want certification only.
