Is Lamb Halal? Zabiha, Imports and US Labels
Lamb is a halal animal. The Qur'an names sheep among the livestock God provides [1], and Hanafi lists name sheep as halal [3]. But lamb is only halal when the animal is slaughtered Islamically, with God's name said over it [4][5]. In the US, look for a named halal certifier or a halal butcher you trust.

What the schools of thought say
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| All schools | Sheep, including lamb, are halal livestock. The Hanafi list of permitted animals names sheep, and treats non-predatory livestock as permissible. | [1][3] |
| Permissive view on supermarket meat | Meat slaughtered by Jews and Christians is permissible when slaughtered properly, and treated as permissible by default when the method is unknown. | [6][7] |
| Hanafi (cautious view on supermarket meat) | God's name must be consciously said and the throat cut properly. If that can't be confirmed, this answer advises avoiding the meat. | [8] |
| Stunning | Disputed. The Halal Monitoring Committee rejects stunning in any form; other certifiers accept some stunning under conditions. | [12] |
Why lamb is halal
The Qur'an lists the livestock God provides in pairs, beginning with sheep and goats [1]. It also describes sacrificial animals over which God's name is mentioned, and says people may eat from them and feed others [2]. A Hanafi list of halal animals names sheep among them [3].
Lamb is simply young sheep, so it falls under the same ruling. The Qur'an's short list of forbidden meats, such as carrion, blood and pork, does not include it [4].
Slaughter: the part that makes it halal
The Qur'an tells believers not to eat meat over which God's name was not said [5]. It also forbids animals killed by strangling, a blow or a fall [4]. So a lamb is only halal when it is slaughtered properly.
Zabiha means slaughter with a sharp blade across the throat while saying God's name. Many US Muslims use it to mean hand-slaughtered meat.
Stunning is a common debate. The UK's Halal Monitoring Committee rejects stunning in any form, including captive bolt and electric head stunning. It argues that stunned animals may die before the cut and may not bleed out fully [12]. Other certifiers accept stunning under conditions. If this matters to you, ask the certifier about it.
Imported lamb from Australia and New Zealand
If your lamb is imported from Australia or New Zealand, the plant it came from can tell you a lot. Halal Monitoring Services (HMS), a US certifier, publishes a list of approved meat plants in both countries, including plants that process lamb [11]. You can check a plant number on the package against that list.
HMS says it certifies only hand-slaughtered meat and monitors the chain from slaughterhouse to distributor to store [10]. A halal mark at the slaughter plant is only part of the story. The meat also needs to stay separate from non-halal meat on its way to you.
What to check in US stores
- A named certifier. USDA does not define what halal means. A 2025 petition asked FSIS to define "zabiha halal" as hand-slaughtered without stunning [9].
- The plant number. On imported lamb, compare it with your certifier's approved list [11].
- No halal label? Your choice depends on your view of meat from Jews and Christians. Some scholars allow it [6][7]; others advise avoiding it when the slaughter can't be verified [8].
- Ask the butcher whether the lamb was hand-slaughtered and whether it was stunned.
Lamb dishes and restaurants
Lamb is common in Middle Eastern, South Asian and Mediterranean food. At restaurants, ask whether the lamb comes from a halal supplier, and ask about wine in sauces for dishes like braised shanks or rack of lamb. Gyro and kebab meat may include lamb, so the supplier matters. See our gyro and shawarma pages, and goat for a close relative.
Frequently asked questions
Is all lamb halal?
Is New Zealand lamb halal?
Some of it comes from halal-approved plants. HMS publishes a list of approved meat plants in New Zealand and Australia [11]. Check the plant number on the package against that list, and look for a certifier's name on the label.
Is lamb from Costco or Walmart halal?
Is stunned lamb halal?
Certifiers disagree. The Halal Monitoring Committee rejects stunning in any form, partly because the animal may die before slaughter [12]. Other certifiers accept stunning under conditions. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.
