Are Doritos Halal?
Doritos are not halal certified in the US, because Frito-Lay has no halal-certified snacks [1]. Cheese flavors like Nacho Cheese use animal enzymes, and a few Frito-Lay seasonings use pork enzymes [2][4]. Some non-cheese flavors avoid animal ingredients. The answer depends on the flavor. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

Why the flavor matters
Plain corn chips are simple: corn, oil and salt. Most Doritos flavors add a seasoning, and that is where the halal question starts.
Cheese is made with enzymes that curdle milk. Frito-Lay says many of the cheeses in its seasonings use animal enzymes, and a small number of its cheese seasonings use pork enzymes [2]. In 2014, Frito-Lay staff told the Vegetarian Resource Group that every Doritos product with cheese or cheese flavoring contained animal enzymes [4].
Frito-Lay also says it has no halal-certified snacks [1]. So in the US, no Doritos flavor carries a halal guarantee from the maker, even if the ingredients look fine.
Flavors without cheese
Some Doritos flavors have no cheese. In 2014, Frito-Lay said the natural flavors in Doritos were not animal-based, and it called Toasted Corn Tortilla Chips all-vegetable [4]. The same report covered Spicy Sweet Chili, which had no cheese and no animal-based flavors at the time [4].
That report is more than ten years old. Recipes change, and new flavors appear often. Before you buy:
- Read the ingredient list for cheese, whey, enzymes, or animal-based flavors.
- Check Frito-Lay's list of products made without pork enzymes [2].
- Check the kosher lists. Frito-Lay says these include products with no animal enzymes or animal flavors [1].
A flavor with no animal ingredients is not the same as a certified halal product. Some Muslims also ask about alcohol used to carry flavorings, which labels do not show. See our page on alcohol and ethanol.
What scholars say about cheese enzymes
Scholars hold different, well-known positions on cheese made with animal enzymes:
- Stricter view: enzymes must come from a halal-slaughtered animal or from microbes. Cheese with unknown animal enzymes is avoided.
- More lenient view: some Hanafi scholars hold that rennet from an animal not slaughtered in a halal way can still be used. Others apply istihalah, where a substance fully changes form.
- Pork enzymes: most of those who allow non-zabiha rennet still avoid pork enzymes.
We report these views and do not issue rulings. Read more on our rennet and enzymes pages.
Popular flavors people ask about
Some flavors get their own questions, so we cover them on separate pages: Doritos Dinamita, Doritos Flamas, and Doritos in the USA. For other cheese-dusted chips, compare Cheetos and Takis.
Outside the US, Doritos may be made in local plants with different recipes. Only trust a halal logo printed on the pack you are holding, from a certifier you recognize. Check the current package label every time, since recipes change.
