Is Creatine Halal? Monohydrate Powder, Capsules & Brands

Short answer Halal

Plain creatine monohydrate is generally halal. Supplement creatine is not taken from meat. Creapure, a widely used German creatine, is made with no animal raw materials and is halal certified [2]. Scholars treat plant-based and synthetic ingredients as permissible unless harmful [6]. The risks are gelatin capsules and some flavor blends. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
Synthetic and plant-based ingredients (Islam Q&A) Products made from plant-based or artificial ingredients are permissible unless they are harmful. Animal-derived ingredients of unknown source call for caution. [6]
Gelatin capsules: Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences Holds that processing fully transforms bones and skin, so gelatin from impure animals becomes pure. This is the main permissive view. [3]
Gelatin capsules: Islamic Fiqh Council (Jeddah) and Saudi Standing Committee Gelatin from pigs or other haram sources is not permissible. [3]
Gelatin capsules: Hanafi (SeekersGuidance) Most present-day Hanafi jurists treat gelatin from halal animals not slaughtered Islamically as impure, the same as pork gelatin, because the change is not complete. [5]
Gelatin capsules: IFANCA (US certifier) Kosher gelatin is not automatically halal, since it may come from pork. Look for gelatin certified halal by a reputable Islamic body. [4]

What creatine is

Creatine is a compound your body makes on its own, mainly in the liver and kidneys, from the amino acids arginine and glycine [1]. It is also found in red meat and seafood. The International Society of Sports Nutrition says about half of the body's daily creatine comes from food [1].

As a supplement, creatine monohydrate is the most studied form [1]. It is popular with athletes and gym-goers, and it comes as a powder, in capsules, or mixed into pre-workout drinks.

How supplement creatine is made

Even though creatine occurs in meat, supplement creatine isn't extracted from animals. Creapure, one of the best-known brands of creatine monohydrate, is made by AlzChem Trostberg in a dedicated GMP facility in Germany [2]. AlzChem describes it as vegan and vegetarian friendly, with no animal-based products or raw materials [2].

This matters because the halal concern with most supplements is the animal source. Islam Q&A notes that products made from plant-based or artificial ingredients are permissible unless they are harmful [6]. A non-animal creatine doesn't raise the slaughter or pork questions that gelatin or collagen do.

Halal certification

AlzChem says Creapure is certified halal and kosher, as well as IFS Food certified [2]. Many supplement brands buy Creapure and print its logo on their tubs.

Keep in mind that the certificate covers the raw creatine. The finished product you buy may add flavors, sweeteners, colors or a capsule shell. If a brand shows its own halal mark with a named certifier, that covers the whole product. If it only says "made with Creapure," the creatine itself is covered, but not necessarily the other ingredients.

Why gelatin capsules are debated

Gelatin is boiled out of animal bones and skin. Scholars disagree about whether that process changes it into a new, pure substance, a concept called istihalah.

  • The Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences held that it does, so even gelatin from impure animals becomes pure [3].
  • The Islamic Fiqh Council in Jeddah and the Saudi Standing Committee reject gelatin from pigs and other haram sources [3].
  • Most present-day Hanafi jurists, per SeekersGuidance, also treat gelatin from cattle not slaughtered Islamically as impure [5].

IFANCA, a US certifier, advises buying gelatin certified halal by a reputable Islamic body [4]. With creatine, you can avoid the question by choosing powder or vegetable capsules.

What to check on the label

  • Capsules. Capsule shells are often gelatin. Gelatin from pork is rejected by most scholars and certifiers, and many Hanafi scholars also reject gelatin from cattle not slaughtered Islamically [3][5]. Look for "vegetable capsules" or a halal mark. A kosher symbol alone doesn't settle it [4].
  • Flavored creatine and pre-workouts. These add flavors and colors. Check them like any other processed food. See our pages on Red 40 and carmine.
  • Blends with protein. Creatine mixed into protein powders brings in the questions about whey and enzymes. See whey protein.
  • Unflavored powder. A plain creatine monohydrate powder with one ingredient is the simplest choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is creatine made from meat?

No, not supplement creatine. Your body makes creatine and it is found in red meat and seafood [1], but supplement makers produce it without animals. Creapure says it uses no animal-based products or raw materials [2].

Is Creapure halal?

Yes. AlzChem Trostberg, which makes Creapure in Germany, says it is halal and kosher certified [2]. A finished product that uses Creapure may add other ingredients, so check for the brand's own halal mark.

Are creatine capsules halal?

It depends on the capsule. Many capsules are made of gelatin, and gelatin from pork or non-zabiha animals is rejected by many scholars [3][5]. Choose vegetable capsules, a halal-certified product, or plain powder.

Is creatine vegan?

Creapure creatine monohydrate is described by its maker as vegan and vegetarian friendly [2]. Flavored versions and capsules can add animal-derived ingredients, so check the full label.
