Is Coca-Cola Halal?

Short answer Varies by country

Coca-Cola is halal certified in some countries but not in the US. Coca-Cola Malaysia says all drinks it makes there are JAKIM certified [1]. US Coke has no halal mark, but the company says it contains no meat and no added alcohol [2][3]. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What the schools of thought say

SchoolViewSource
Fiqh Council of North America Soft drinks such as Coca-Cola are permissible. Alcohol used to dissolve flavors and colors loses its taste, color and smell in the drink, so it no longer counts as an intoxicant. [4]
IFANCA (certifier guidance) Uses limits of under 0.1% alcohol in finished foods and under 0.5% in ingredients, and leaves the final line to each consumer's own commitment. [4]
SeekersGuidance Based on Coca-Cola's official statements, rumors are not grounds to call the drink impermissible. [5]

What is in Coca-Cola

Classic Coca-Cola is carbonated water, a sweetener, caramel color, phosphoric acid, caffeine and "natural flavors". None of these are meat products. The halal questions people ask are about two things: whether there is alcohol in the flavoring, and whether the drink carries a halal certificate where you live.

Coca-Cola's own answer on alcohol is short. It says Coca-Cola does not contain alcohol and that authorities in more than 200 countries class it as a non-alcoholic drink [2]. In a 2012 statement, the company added that it does not add alcohol as an ingredient, that trace alcohol can occur naturally in many foods and drinks, and that its soft drinks contain no meat [3].

The trace alcohol question

In 2012, the French consumer institute INC tested 19 colas for the magazine 60 Millions de Consommateurs. Close to half had traces of alcohol, including Coke and Pepsi. The reported level was below 10 mg per liter, which is about 0.001% [3].

Most Muslim bodies that have looked at this treat such tiny traces as acceptable. The Fiqh Council of North America ruled that soft drinks like Coke are permissible, because alcohol used as a carrier for flavor loses its taste, color and smell in the final drink [4]. IFANCA, a US halal certifier, uses working limits of under 0.1% alcohol in finished foods, while noting that each person decides where to draw the line [4]. SeekersGuidance also concluded that rumors about Coke are not a reason to call it impermissible [5].

Some Muslims choose to avoid any product made with alcohol-based flavor carriers. That is a stricter personal standard, and it is a valid choice. Read more on our page about alcohol (ethanol) in food.

Why Coke is certified in some countries only

Coca-Cola is made and bottled locally, and halal rules differ by country. Coca-Cola Malaysia says every product made by its Malaysian bottler is certified halal by JAKIM, the national halal authority, and it notes that halal requirements vary from country to country [1]. It tells shoppers to check the halal logo on the pack for the latest information [1].

In the US, there is no such program. In 2012 the company said its soft drinks cannot be formally certified halal everywhere, but are registered as non-alcoholic and meat-free, and are accepted as suitable in Muslim-majority countries [3]. So a can in the US is not certified, but its ingredient story is the same.

Diet Coke, Coke Zero and other flavors

Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar swap sugar for sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame potassium. Cherry, vanilla and seasonal flavors add more "natural flavors", and the company does not publish how each one is made.

Recipes change, and each country can use a slightly different formula. Check the current label on the bottle or can you buy. If you live in a country with halal labeling, the halal logo is the clearest answer [1].

Other drinks to compare

The key questions are the same each time: is there added alcohol, is there an animal ingredient, and is there a halal mark where you live.
