Is Balsamic Vinegar Halal? What Scholars Say
Balsamic vinegar is accepted as halal by many scholars, because the grape alcohol has turned into vinegar [3]. But most Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is blended with wine vinegar [1], and Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars reject vinegar deliberately made from wine [3][4]. Your answer depends on the view you follow. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What the schools of thought say
| School | View | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Vinegar made from wine is permissible, whether the wine turned into vinegar on its own or was deliberately converted. | [4] |
| Shafi'i | Wine that turns into vinegar on its own is pure and permissible. Wine deliberately turned into vinegar stays impure. | [3][4] |
| Hanbali | Deliberately converting wine into vinegar is prohibited, and so is the resulting vinegar. Vinegar that formed naturally is allowed. | [3][4] |
| Maliki | Reports differ. Some Maliki scholars reject deliberate conversion; one report says the conversion is disliked but the vinegar may be consumed. | [3][4] |
What balsamic vinegar is made of
There are two main kinds of balsamic vinegar from Italy.
Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (IGP/PGI) is the kind most US stores sell. Its official consortium says it is a blend of cooked or concentrated grape must (at least 20%) and wine vinegar (at least 10%), aged in wooden barrels for at least 60 days [1]. Caramel may be added for color, up to 2% [1].
Traditional Balsamic Vinegar (DOP) is made only from cooked grape must and aged for at least 12 years [2]. It is much more expensive and sold in small bottles.
Cheaper "balsamic-style" vinegars, glazes and dressings may add sugar, thickeners or other vinegars. Always read the label.
Does balsamic vinegar contain alcohol?
All vinegar starts as alcohol. Yeast turns sugar into alcohol, and then acetic acid bacteria turn that alcohol into acetic acid [5]. So vinegar is the end point of a process that passes through alcohol.
A small amount can remain. The rules for Balsamic Vinegar of Modena cap alcohol at 1.5% by volume [2]. That trace does not make vinegar intoxicating, and scholars agree that wine which turns into vinegar on its own may be eaten [3]. The debate is mostly about how the vinegar was made, not the trace itself.
Why scholars differ on vinegar from wine
Sahih Muslim reports that the Prophet was asked whether wine could be made into vinegar and said no [3]. Scholars read this hadith differently.
- Natural change: if wine becomes vinegar by itself, scholars agree it is permissible [3].
- Deliberate change: if people add something to wine to turn it into vinegar, the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools and some Malikis say it is not allowed [3]. The Hanafi school allows it, and explains the hadith as an early, strict stage of the alcohol ban [4].
Modern wine vinegar is usually made on purpose, by adding a vinegar culture to wine [5]. That is why the Modena blend falls into the disputed area. Fatwa bodies also differ by country. A study of national fatwas found that Malaysia, which follows the Shafi'i school, allows wine vinegar only when it changed naturally, while Indonesia allows both kinds [6].
One related point: buying vinegar from a seller is allowed unless you know or suspect it was made deliberately from wine [3].
How to choose a balsamic vinegar
- Check the type. "Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale" is grape must only [2]. "Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP" includes wine vinegar [1].
- Read glazes and dressings. They may contain thickeners, colorings or flavorings. See our pages on xanthan gum and glycerin if those appear.
- Look for halal certification if you want a product that has been reviewed by a certifier.
If you follow the Hanafi view, both kinds are generally fine. If you follow the Shafi'i or Hanbali view, you may prefer traditional balsamic or a vinegar not made from wine.
Alternatives if you want to avoid wine vinegar
If you'd rather avoid vinegar made from wine, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar and distilled vinegar can stand in for balsamic in most dressings. A little honey or date syrup gives the sweetness. Read our guides to vinegar, apple cider vinegar and red wine vinegar.
Frequently asked questions
Is balsamic vinegar haram because it comes from grapes?
Does balsamic vinegar of Modena contain wine?
Is balsamic glaze halal?
Balsamic glaze is balsamic vinegar reduced or thickened, so the same vinegar question applies. Glazes may also add sugar, thickeners or flavorings, so read the label. Traditional balsamic made only from grape must avoids the wine vinegar question [2].
